Target question: What is the equation of line m?

IMPORTANT: For many coordinate geometry Data Sufficiency questions, we are often checking to see whether the statements "lock" a particular line/curve into having just one possible location. This concept is discussed in much greater detail in our free video: http://www.gmatprepnow.com/module/gmat- ... cy?id=1103

Statement 1: The slope of line m is 2
There are MANY different lines we can draw with slope 2.
Just draw a line with slope 2 and then move it up and down wherever you want, and the slope will still be 2.
Since statement 1 does not LOCK IN the placement of line m, it is NOT SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: The x-intercept of line m is 3
There are MANY different lines we can draw with an x-intercept of 3.
Just draw a line through the point (3,0) and spin it around that point, and the x-intercept will still be 3.
Since statement 2 does not LOCK IN the placement of line m, it is NOT SUFFICIENT

Statements 1 and 2 combined
Take our line with slope 2 (from statement 1).
Notice that, if we say this line must also pass through the point (3,0), then there is ONLY ONE such possible line.
Since the combined statements LOCK IN the placement of line m, they are SUFFICIENT

ASIDE: Are we going to actually find the equation of line m? No! We need only recognize that we COULD find the equation (since there's only 1 line that meets the given conditions). Finding the actual equation is a waste of valuable time.

Answer = C

Cheers,
Brent

When you ask a particular question, as a courtesy to experts and fellow posters, you should always mention why do you think it should be/not be a certain option. This way experts will know what areas to focus on for their replies.

As for your question, lets analyse the statements individually,

Standard equation of a line m is : y=mx+c ,

Per statement 1, m=2, so the equation could be y=2x+3 or y=2x+5 or y=2x+9. Thus you get no particular answer.

Per statement 2, x-intercept (value of 'x' you get when you put y=0 in the equation y=mx+c)=3 ---> x= -c/m=3. No particular values of c or m, making this statement NOT SUFFICIENT

Combining you get, m=2 and -c/m=3 ---> c= -6, giving you the final equation of the line m as y=2x-6. Thus you get 1 unique equation of line, making C as the correct answer.

S1: m=2 - we cannot get c. (as required in the equation of line - y = mx+c) , so insufficient ...

S2: x intercept is 3. That means the cordinate is (3,0). Not sufficient.

Combining - Substituting the value of m ,x, & y in the line equation, we can get the value of c and thus the equation of the line.

Thus C.

C is right answer . Any equation of line can be represented by equation y=MX +C . M is slope C is constant.
