1 1/4 is equal to 5/4

The number of wire pieces = Total length/ Lenth of one Piece = 24/(5/4) = (24*4)/5 = 96/5.

Now the nunber of pieces has to be an integer value and it cannot be more than 96/5 since we have run out of material. Can be only less. So rounding down 96/5 to an interger gives 95/5 = 19.

During the solution it would help to realize that 96/5 lies between 95/5 and 100/5 ie 19 < 96/5 < 20. Putting this in words : We ran out of material for the 20th piece, we have material enough for 19 pieces only.

I believe that this would be a 500-600 level question. It is relatively simple. The key here is that if you can get yourself to knock such questions out in a minute, you save the extra minute for a harder question to boost your score!

$$1\frac{1}{4} =\frac{5}{4}$$

$$\rightarrow\frac{24}{\frac{5}{4}} = \frac{96}{5}=19.2$$

since they are only asking for the whole of 5/4 feet hence Answer is C

we can make the division easier --> 24/(10/8) = (24*8)/10 = 192/10 =19,2 (C)

we are asked to find number of 1 $$\frac{1}{4}$$ ft pieces in 24 feet of wire

1 $$\frac{1}{4}$$ ft = 1.25 feet

$$\frac{24}{1.25}$$ = 19.2

so 19 pieces of length 1.25 feet can be cut from the the wire of length 24 feet

the maximum number is the greatest integer less than or equal to the quotient when 24 feet is divided by 1 1/4 feet.
the quotient is 19.2, and the maximum number of 1 1/4 foot pieces is 19.
so,the best ans is C.

The brackets and division\ are very confusing . I Read 1 $$\frac{1}{4}$$ ft as 1/ frac (1/4) which equals 4, how to read the brackets and division signs correctly in these
