What is the maximum number of 2-inch by 2-inch by 2-inch solid cubes that can be cut from six solid cubes that are 1 foot on each side? (12 inches = 1 foot)

(A) 8
(B) 64
(C) 216
(D) 1,296
(E) 1,728

The volume of one of the six solid cubes is 12*12*12 inches.

We have 6 such cubes and need to cut 2*2*2 inch cubes from this.

Therefore, the maximum number of cubes that can be cut is \(\frac{6*12*12*12}{2*2*2} = 6*6*6*6\) = 1296(Option D)
