Total terms = 5 (odd)

Rule says, for odd number of terms arranged in ascending or descending order, middle term is the median.

From st 1 - 3 highest values are 15, 18, 20. We know only two terms are left before 15.

So 15 is the mid term. Sufficient.

From st 2 - We only know the smallest term. No sufficient.

So (A)

If we have 5 data values and we arrange them in order (either increasing or decreasing order), then the median will be the 3rd value. So, it will be either the 3rd lowest value or the 3rd highest value.

(1) 3 highest values are given, so we have the 3rd highest value (15), that is our median. Sufficient.

(2) Only the smallest value given, nothing else. Insufficient.

Hence A answer

Forget conventional ways of solving math questions. For DS problems, the VA (Variable Approach) method is the quickest and easiest way to find the answer without actually solving the problem. Remember that equal numbers of variables and independent equations ensure a solution.

The first step of VA (Variable Approach) method is modifying the original condition and the question, and rechecking the number of variables and the number of equations.

Modifying the question:
The median of 5 data values is the third highest value. So, the question is asking for the third highest value.

Condition 1)
Condition 1) tells us that the third highest value is 15.
Therefore, condition 1) is sufficient.

Condition 2)
Condition 2) tells us nothing about the third highest value.
This condition is NOT sufficient.

Therefore, A is the answer.

Answer: A
