we are looking for the number of students taking psychology.

Statement 1: ratio is given.

we can form an equation .

History = x

psychology = 2x

but no more clues.

Statement 2:

Total is given but no other information is given.

History + psychology =30.

Combining :

2x + x = 30

x = 10.

Psychology = 2x = 2*10 =20.

The best answer is C.

Statement 1: Let the no. of students taking history=x
No. of Students of taking psychology=2x

No information about total no of students and no of students who take both. Clearly Insufficient.

Statement 2: 30 Students take both psychology and history.
No information about total no. of students. Insufficient.

(1)+(2)

No. of students who take both psychology and history=30.
No. of students taking psychology only=2x-30
No. of students taking history only=x-30

Total no. of students= 2x-30+x-30+30=3x-30
Since we don't know the total no. of students. We can't equate 3x-30 to anything. As we have to find 2x and we can't find x.

Hence, IMO, Option E.
