% discount is simply asking for the % decrease. (Profit is a % increase and Loss is a % decrease)

% decrease = \(\frac{Difference}{Larger \space Number}*100 = \frac{20}{120}*100 = 16.67\)%

Option A

Solution

To find
We need to determine
    • The percentage discount on a jacket, which is marked down from $120 to $100

Approach and Working out
Original marked up value = 120
Value after discount = 100
    • Therefore, discount amount = 120 – 100 = 20
    • Hence, discount percentage = (20/120) x 100 = 16.67%
(note that by default discount percentage is always calculated based on the marked price)

Thus, option A is the correct answer.
