What is the tenths digit of the number d when it is written as a decimal?

(1) d = 54/25
(2) 1000d = 2160

Solution:

We need to determine the tenths digit of d when it is written as a decimal.

Statement One Alone:

d = 54/25 = 2.16

We see that the tenths digit of d is 1. Statement one alone is sufficient.

Statement Two Alone:

d = 2160/1000 = 216/100 = 2.16

We see that the tenths digit of d is 1. Statement two alone is sufficient.

In a general decimal representation like x.pqrst…… the digit p is called the tenth digit since it represents the number of one-tenths.

From statement I alone, d = $$\frac{54 }{ 25}$$.
$$\frac{54}{ 25}$$ = 2.16. Therefore, the tenths digit is 1.
Statement I alone is sufficient to find the tenths digit. Answer options B, C and E can be eliminated. Possible answer options are A or D.

From statement II alone, 1000d = 2160. Therefore, d = $$\frac{2160 }{1000}$$ = 2.16. The tenths digit is 1.
Statement II alone is sufficient. Answer option A can be eliminated.

The correct answer option is D.

Hope that helps!

From statement 1, we have d=54/25
I always prefer to convert denominator in terms of 100 or 1000 instead of long division
So multiple numerator and denominator by 4, d=54*4/25*4= (50+4)*4/100=216/100=2.16
Suff.

From statement 2, d=2160/1000 which is same as st1.
Suff.
