I made mine y=1+ (6/x) . Obviously that is wrong however I don't understand why you made yours x equals Senior Manager Joined: 13 Feb 2018 Posts: 432 GMAT 1: 640 Q48 V28 Re: What is the value of [#permalink] ### Show Tags 24 Apr 2019, 02:10 Albs wrote: LevanKhukhunashvili I understand your working out but how can we observe that 6 is divided by x. Obviously that is wrong however I don't understand why you made yours x equals Please find the similarity between first and the circled part of the second expressions If the first expression is x Then the circled part on the second expression must be x as well Hope it's clear Attachments 4.23.png [ 3.92 KiB | Viewed 382 times ] Math Revolution GMAT Instructor Joined: 16 Aug 2015 Posts: 9032 GMAT 1: 760 Q51 V42 GPA: 3.82 Re: What is the value of [#permalink] ### Show Tags 25 Apr 2019, 00:24 Attachment: 4.25.png [ 1.58 KiB | Viewed 349 times ] This is equivalent to $$x = 1 + \frac{6}{x}$$ or $$x^2 = x + 6.$$ Rearranging yields $$x^2 - x + 6 = 0$$ or $$(x+2)(x-3)=0.$$ So, $$x = -2$$ or $$x = 3$$. Since $$x$$ is a positive number, $$x = 3$$. Therefore, the answer is C Answer: C _________________ MathRevolution: Finish GMAT Quant Section with 10 minutes to spare The one-and-only World’s First Variable Approach for DS and IVY Approach for PS with ease, speed and accuracy.
