(1) -(a + b) = 2a – b + 9

(2) a + b = 6

St1:- -(a + b) = 2a – b + 9
Or, -a-b=2a-b+9
Adding 'b' on both sides,
-a=2a+9
Or, 3a=9
Or, a=3
Sufficient.

St2:- a+b=6
We have one equation and two variables. We can't determine an unique value of a.
Insufficient.

Ans. (A)

value of a?

(1) -(a + b) = 2a – b + 9

-a-b=2a-b+9

Cancel b

-a=2a+9

-3a=9

a=-3

Hence Suff

(2) a + b = 6

3+3=6

2+4=6

Not Suff

Hence A

(1) -(a + b) = 2a – b + 9

(2) a + b = 6

solve for a..

1) b cancels out, we can get a
2) no info about b
