Re: What is the value of odd positive integer m? [#permalink]
even i think only a is right answer.
because only one positive factor, it can be only one. all prime numbers have 1 and itself as factors.
2 is not sufficient.
correct me if i am wrong.

Hi Brunel,

the option a says that m has only one positive odd factor, but it dont say that m has no even factor.
The option says nothing about even factors.

Hence, the answer can be 2 also, as it has only one odd factor = 1

so as per above understanding I got correct answer as C.

Please guide me with this question.

'm' is an odd - positive - integer

- means it can be anything from 1,3,5,7... and so on
- means it will have only odd factors.

Statement 1 - m has only one positive odd factor.

Now if I select any odd number that is
a) Non Prime -
eg -> 21 - factors are 1, 3, 7 and 21

b) Prime -
eg -> 5 - factors are 1 and 5

c) '1' - It is the only odd digit having only one factor.

Hence Statement 1 is Sufficient

Statement 2 - m has no positive even factors

This we already know from the stem that m has no even factors as 'm' itself is odd.

Hence Statement 2 is in insufficient.

Hence answer is A, that is, statement 1 alone is sufficient

Hope it Helps :)

Re: What is the value of odd positive integer m? [#permalink]
Hi,

This is a pretty-straight forward question.

In the question, its mentioned that, “m” is a positive integer and odd. We need to find the value of “m”

So, m could be 1,3,5,7,9……

Statement I is sufficient:

m has only one positive odd factor.

So, one is the only number which has only one factor.

All other numbers are either prime or composite numbers, which has more than 1 factor.

So, here m has to be 1.

Hence, Statement I is sufficient.

Statement II is insufficient:

m has no positive even factors.

Odd numbers don’t have even factors. But we already know that(from the question) m is odd.

But it doesn’t help to narrow down the value of m.

So, it is insufficient.

So the answer is A.
