Statement I is sufficient:

6 - 3x = x - 2 then x = 2
6 - 3x = -x + 2 then x = 2

Both ways we are getting x = 2 hence statement is sufficient

Statement II is insufficient:

5x + 3 = 2x + 9 then x = 2
5x + 3 = -2x - 9 then x will not be equal to 2

Getting two different answers hence answer is A

Yeah Buddy thanks, but what we are trying to do here is actually avoid having to do it the long way and try to learn how Bunuel chooses only 1 case for statement 1 as a short cut applying RHS decision rule. Understanding when one can use such shortcut could save valuable time in real GMAT conditions

A

(1) Gives x = 2 (Sufficient)
(2) Gives x = 2 & x = -12/7

As we are getting two different values, (2) is not sufficient

Case 1: x >=2
3x -6 = x-2
2x = 4
x = 2
Case 2: x<2

4x = 8
x =2
x = 2 is the only solution
SUFFICIENT

(2) |5x + 3| = 2x + 9
Case 1: x >= -3/5
5x + 3 = 2x + 9
3x = 6
x = 2 >=-3/5
Case 2: x<-3/5 = -.6
-5x - 3 = 2x + 9
7x = -12
x = -12/7 < .6
x = {-12/7, 2}
NOT SUFFICIENT

IMO A
