1)x - y = 2
Multiply (-1) both sides:
y - x = -2
So, (x − y)(y − x + 1) = (2)(-2+1) = -2 - Sufficient!
2)y - x + 1 = -1
y - x = -2
Similarly, x - y = 2
So, (x − y)(y − x + 1) = (2)(-1) = -2 - Sufficient!
IMO, (D)!

if we know x-y we can calculate (x − y)(y − x + 1)


Statement (1) x − y = 2

Sufficient

Statement (2) y − x + 1 = −1

x-y = 2
Sufficient

(D) is correct

(x − y)(y − x + 1) ?

(1) x − y = 2
= y-x = -2
=2* (-2+1)
=2*(-1)
=-2
Sufficient.

(2) y − x + 1 = −1
y-x = -2
=x-y = 2
=2*(-2+1)
=-2
Sufficient again.

What is the value of (x − y)(y − x + 1) ?


(1) x − y = 2

y - x =-2

(x − y)(y − x + 1)= 2 * ( -2+1) = -2

Statement 1 alone is sufficient

(2) y − x + 1 = −1

y - x = -2
x - y = 2
(x − y)(y − x + 1) = 2 * -1 =-2

Statement 2 alone is also sufficient

Option D is the answer.

Answer is D.

Statement 1 : x-y = 2. From this we certainly can derive the denominator (as y-x = -2).

Statement 2 : y-x+1 = -1. We can derive the numerator from this expression. y-x = -2. So x-y =2.

So, each of the statements are sufficient independently.

Answer: D

What is the value of (x − y)(y − x + 1) ?

(1) x − y = 2
substituting in (x − y)(y − x + 1) will give the required value.
Sufficient.

(2) y − x + 1 = −1
=> y - x = -2
which is same as statement 1.
Sufficient.

=> y-x=-2 => y-x+1=-1
=> Suff

(2) y − x + 1 = −1
=> y-x = -2 => x-y = 2
=> Suff

=> Choice D
