When a new restaurant, Martin’s Cafe, opened in Riverville last year, many people predicted that business at the Wildflower Inn, Riverville’s only other restaurant, would suffer from the competition. Surprisingly, however, in the year since Martin’s Cafe opened, the average number of meals per night served at the Wildflower Inn has increased significantly.

Which of the following, if true, most helps to explain the increase?

A. Unlike the Wildflower Inn, Martin’s Cafe serves considerably more meals on weekends than it does on weekdays.
B. Most of the customers of Martin’s Cafe had never dined in Riverville before this restaurant opened, and on most days Martin’s Cafe attracts more customers than it can seat.
C. The profit per meal is higher, on average, for meals served at Martin’s Cafe than for those served at the Wildflower Inn.
D. The Wildflower Inn is not open on Sundays, and therefore Riverville residents who choose to dine out on that day must either eat at Martin’s Cafe or go to neighboring towns to eat.
E. A significant proportion of the staff at Martin’s Cafe are people who formerly worked at the Wildflower Inn and were hired away by the owner of Martin’s Cafe.

B. Martin's cafe has attracted a new set of customers to the area thus increasing business for both restaurants.

Is it B?

Need to explain the increase in the average number of meals in Wildflower Inn. Only B provides reasons for increase in the number of customers.

B it is.

Martin's cafe attracted new customers. Most of these new customers eat at Martin's Cafe but few of them also eat at Wildflower Inn's. This way not oly Wildflower Inn's old customer base is retained, but also some more customers added.

Surprisingly, however, in the year since Martin’s Cafe opened, the average number of meals per night served at the Wildflower Inn has increased significantly.

Which of the following, if true, most
Edit: helps to explain
the increase?

A. Unlike the Wildflower Inn, Martin’s Cafe serves considerably more meals on weekends than it does on weekdays.
Edit: it does not help to answer why Wildflower's meals per nite increased

B. Most of the customers of Martin’s Cafe had never dined in Riverville before this restaurant opened, and on most days Martin’s Cafe attracts more customers than it can seat.
Edit: it correctly answered why Wildflower 's meals per nite increased

C. The profit per meal is higher, on average, for meals served at Martin’s Cafe than for those served at the Wildflower Inn.
Edit: not relevant

D. The Wildflower Inn is not open on Sundays, and therefore Riverville residents who choose to dine out on that day must either eat at Martin’s Cafe or go to neighboring towns to eat.
Edit: it weakens the conclusion

E. A significant proportion of the staff at Martin’s Cafe are people who formerly worked at the Wildflower Inn and were hired away by the owner of Martin’s Cafe.
Edit: if its true, Wildflower 's business should have been ruined other than profitable as the fact

Let me explain my approach that led me to the correct answer, B.

This is intresting and a little tricky question, because in the end it says "the average number of meals per night served at the Wildflower Inn has increased". Think for a sec, although the Cafe has suffered from lack of competency, why the average has increased?? Nice question!

The average indeed is "sum/# of customers" The customers must somehow decreased, so we must look for a choice that explains this answer in this approach.

In choice B we have some kind of this info. It says that "Most of the customers of Martin’s Cafe had never dined in Riverville before this restaurant opened, and on most days Martin’s Cafe attracts more customers than it can seat." What it means? It means that there is just 2 restaurant in the town, so if one restaurant has more customers, the other one has fewer customers. In the average rose.

A. Unlike the Wildflower Inn, Martin’s Cafe serves considerably more meals on weekends than it does on weekdays.
Does not help why Wildflower sales are up

B. Most of the customers of Martin’s Cafe had never dined in Riverville before this restaurant opened, and on most days Martin’s Cafe attracts more customers than it can seat.
Correct choice as it explain why some cutomer number might have gone up.

C. The profit per meal is higher, on average, for meals served at Martin’s Cafe than for those served at the Wildflower Inn.
Out of Scope.

D. The Wildflower Inn is not open on Sundays, and therefore Riverville residents who choose to dine out on that day must either eat at Martin’s Cafe or go to neighboring towns to eat.
it is showing Opposite.

E. A significant proportion of the staff at Martin’s Cafe are people who formerly worked at the Wildflower Inn and were hired away by the owner of Martin’s Cafe.
out of Scope
