Assume the magazine costs $1 per month. For 27 months, the total value is $27

The total value of the discount, of what we are saving by not having to pay it, is 75% of $1, or .75

The value of the discount = the amount we save, the amount we do NOT have to spend

If m is the number of months it takes for the value of what we are saving to equal $27, then

.75m = 27
\(\frac{3}{4}\)m = 27
m = 36

Say the regular monthly price is $p.

The total value of the discount for m moths \(= \frac{3}{4}*p*m\).
The regular monthly price for 27 months \(= 27p\).

Equate: \(\frac{3}{4}*p*m = 27p\);
\(m = 36\).

Answer: D.

We can let the regular price per month = r. Thus, the price for 27 months is 27r.

When purchased for m months, the regular price = rm and the total value of the discount was (0.75r)m = (¾)rm.

Thus:

27r = (¾)rm

27 = (¾)m

108 = 3m

36 = m

Answer: D

Why is 3/4 *x*m is The total value of discount?

1/4*x*m should not be called as the total value of discount as THIS IS THE AMOUNT WHICH GOT LESS?

SHOULDN'T WE CALL 3/4 *x*m be THE TOTAL VALUE AFTER THE DISCOUNT???

just due the language I thought the equation will be

1/4 *x* m = 27 * m

PLEASE HELP bro

The total value of the discount is the amount by which the price was reduced. the amount which was saved due to the discount. For example, if something costs $100 and you get a discount of 75%, you buy at $25 and save $75. So, 75 percent off the total value of the discount is $75.

Hi I too am confused about the wording.

The question says "the publisher offered a discount of 75 percent off the regular monthly price" - to me this seems to be short hand for "the publisher offered a 75% discount off of the regular monthly price." The discounted price is thus 0.25 x regular price, or 0.75 off of the regular price.

My confusion stems from the word 'off' (or in other words 'off of') vs 'of'

Is this correct??

srchen and pclawong : yes, "75 percent off" is equivalent to "75 percent off of," and both mean you pay 25 percent of the regular price. Or: 75 percent off means you pay 1/4. (You "take off" 3/4.) So you're right.

The value is what I do not have to pay, the amount or percent I save, by getting the discount.

And that is 75 percent "off" regular price, or 75 percent "off of" regular price. Hope it helps.

I'm not sure that this problem is written intentionally to be tricky.
The key is to recognize that states the the price of the discount itself, not the new discounted price, is equal to 27months

The new discount price is x/4
The price of the discount itself is 3x/4

3x/4(m) = 27x
3/4(m) = 27
m=36

Solution : - The question is really confusing (it is like a mini CR question and we have to infer what exactly the we need to find out) :tongue_opt3
I have tried solving this question, in the conventional way of assuming $100 for my easy understanding and calculation.

Let regular price be $100, so if anyone buys for 27 months than it is $2700.

Now according to the question, this $2700 is equivalent to 75% discount if someone get the subscription for 'm' months.

Now the middle portion of the question (If the total value...) in simple language, 2700= 75% of $100 purchased for 'm' months. => 2700 = (75/100)*100*m => 2700/75 = m => m= 3600 or 36% (D)
