There are a couple of points we should look at here:
1. The correct approach to idioms
Some test prep resources approach idioms incorrectly. They say that {X is idiomatic} means {everything else is wrong}. This is not the right way to approach idioms or verbal generally. Instead, we should focus on unidiomatic structures, like {Y is unidiomatic}, {Z is unidiomatic}. You may be going from {many correct options use a second
as after the first
as} to {any option that doesn't use a second
as after the first is incorrect}, but this is a risky approach.
2. In some constructions, using the second
as leads to a very awkward sentence. Have a look at the example used
here.
2a. saw three plays in as many daysIf we insist on the second
as, we'll end up with this:
2b. saw three plays in as many days as three(2b) is wrong. As in, it's so awkward that it's wrong.
