Straight parallelism.

Whereas the use of synthetic fertilizers......, an increase in their use.....

"the use of.." and "increase in...." and parallel structures. So, it has to be between only A and B.

Can someone explain why D is wrong

edit: usage of "if"???

While is a contrast marker (although it can be be used to depict simultaneity in other cases). There is no contrast between create serious environmental problems.. and may accelerate soil structure deterioration.. They are on the same side, and therefore using while is wrong.

Moreover the usage of if immediately after while is awkward.

The construction if substituted for, this substitution... is unnecessarily wordy.

A. an increase in their use can create serious environmental problems such as water pollution, and their substitution for more traditional fertilizers
B. an increase in their use can create serious environmental problems like water pollution, and if substituted for more traditional fertilizers, it
C. if these fertilizers are used increasingly, they can create serious environmental problems such as water pollution, and if used as substitutions for more traditional fertilizers, they
D. the increased usage of these fertilizers can create serious environmental problems such as water pollution, while if substituted for more traditional fertilizers, this substitution
E. the increased usage of these fertilizers can create serious environmental problems like water pollution, while their substitution for more traditional fertilizers

B,E - out for using "like" to show example
C- incorrectly uses "substitutions" instead of "substitutes" -- you can use something as substitute, not substitution.
D- "while if" is awkward. while also suggests that two actions are happening together, which is not the case here.

Ans: "A"

Hey Fluke,

Does isnt 'their' in A ambiguios ?
Does their refer to fertilizers or productivity ?? How do we know ?

Hi,

“their" refers to plural antecedant fertilizers. Productivity is singular. "Their" cannot refer to singular noun.

As a rule, to find out countable and uncountable nouns - put 1,2,3 before the noun and check if the phrase makes sense. If YES the noun is countable (plural form exists) and If NO the noun in uncountable (plural form doesn't exist)

1 fertilizer, 2 fertilizers etc - make sense. Fertilizer - Countable

1 productivity, 2 productivity etc - doesn't make sense. Productivity - Uncountable

Hope this helps.

I removed A for "Their substitution" that conveys a different meaning.

Intention is to say " If they are used as a substitution, they accelerate soil structure deterioration and soil erosion." Their substitution - synthetic fertiliser substitution, that sounds wrong.

B and E out for the use of Like to give examples.

D - Whereas......, while if.... is wrong

the problem with D is not that it is awkward but it has modifier problem.
while if substituted for more traditional fertilizers, this substitution

Instead of this substitution the next clause should have started with
fertilizers.

A is not the best sounding option but it is lesser of all the evil.

i chose D and u make me understand why D is wrong
