Which of the following best completes the passage below?

Monarch butterflies, whose average life span is nine months, migrate from the midwestern United States to selected forests outside Mexico City. It takes at least three generations of monarchs to make the journey, so the great-great-grandchildren who finally arrive in the Mexican forests have never been there before. Yet they return to the same trees their forebears left. Scientists theorize that monarchs, like homing pigeons, map their routes according to the earth’s electromagnetic fields. As a first step in testing this theory, lepidopterists plan to install a low-voltage transmitter inside one grove of “butterfly treesâ€

Scientists made this test in order to see if the monarch butterflies map their routes according to the earth’s electromagnetic fields.

However, AS A FIRST STEP to verify their theory, they have to make sure that the monarch butterflies can recognize (or sense) the electromagnetic fields.

The earth's electromagnetic field is good for nothing if the butterflies do not even have the ability to sense the electricity.

Therefore, my guess is (C)

(C) low-voltage electricity can affect butterflies, whether positively or adversely.

I might be wrong. But, this is my opinion.

The choice (c) is an assumption and not the conclusion.

Here, you are not required to guess the assumption. You are required to complete the sentence. i.e. the conclusion.

Choice (d) is the best conclusion from the passage.

I would pick B.

Why the scientist are placing a transmitter in the forest is to
discover if the butterlies are sensible to electricity. Therfore, I think
the passage should end with monarch butterflies are sensitive to electricity

First I chose 'E'

but after reading all posts, C is probably right answer

I will go with (B). I guess scientists are checking their sensitivity to electricity.

B here too. Like the passage says, the FIRST step in proving their theory. The scientist are looking to find whether butterflies can SENSE electricity, not be AFFECTED by it. Heck, pretty much anyone can be affected by electricity except electric eels...

I have a question.
If I say I can "sense" something, can I also say I am "sensitive" to that something?

Do "sense" and "sensitive" mean the same?

Nice one Macca. I had chosen C. OA is B!

Good question. You can use both just like that. It just matters what kind of sentence you use it in.

"I sense the Force." - means that you can detect the force RIGHT NOW

"I am sensitive to the Force." - means that you CAN detect the force. Meaning that you have the ability to identify the force.

Definitions:

"to sense" means to comprehend something or to detect something.

"sensitive" when used as an adjective means that you are receptive to something, that you can be stimulated by external, or certain external, elements.

"sensitive" as a noun is a person who is easily irritated or even someone who has "psychic" abilities.

(B) monarch butterflies are sensitive to electricity
(C) low-voltage electricity can affect butterflies, whether positively or adversely

If you hesitate between B and C, you can eliminate C because this test is based on monarch butterflies and not on general butterfly. C could be false : maybe only monarch butterflies react to this test, not all butterflies.
