Which of the following best completes the passage below?

Most design firms place heavy emphasis on previous experience when looking to hire a new employee. A recent survey shows that designers aged between 25 and 35 come up with new ideas about 30% more frequently than designers aged between 35 and 50. This data clearly suggests that __________.

A. the success of a design firm is based completely on its staff since the product it provides is creativity itself
B. designers after the age of 45 are usually in positions of management, and not in those requiring creative problem-solving
C. within the said age groups, older designers, thanks to their acquired experience and style, are more creative than younger designers
D. designers with less than ten years of experience are more creative than designers with more than ten years of experience
E. design firms should be more open-minded when considering the employment of recently graduated designers

Why is A wrong?
This answer choice presents us with an additional premise, not a conclusion based on the premises given. Factors leading to the success of a design company are not really addressed in this argument.

Why is B wrong?
This answer choice goes too far beyond the premises. First, we know nothing about management positions and designers' promotion to such positions. Second, we don't know what happens to designer's creativity after the age of 50 - it could bounce back again - so we cannot infer anything about designers over 45.

Why is C wrong?
This answer choice contradicts the second premise. If younger designers come up with new ideas more often than older ones, then it cannot be inferred that older designers are more creative.

Why is D wrong?
This answer choice draws an incorrect inference based on the second premise. The survey relates to specific age groups but we cannot link years of experience with one's age without knowing at what age that person started working as a designer.

Option E fits the bill perfectly since the arguments begins by stating that companies prefer experienced employees but next statement is a counter premise stating that younger lot are coming up with more creative idea. Hence , companies should be more flexible and not rely just on previous experience but leverage the ideas from younger lot

The trick in the question is that the first premise is actually a counter premise and the question is to be solved by considering it as counter premise rather than a positive one sinnce if the first sentence is to be considered as the correct way then we will not be able to select the option E but C and D will be more attractive

E is the answer here. Argument never talks about experience , it only talks about age. D cannot be the answer

+1 E

The data is provided to highlight the contrast between an ongoing belief and the result of a survey.

Hi Kannu44

Data given:

Most design firms place heavy emphasis on previous experience when looking to hire a new employee.
Recent survey results - designers aged between 25 and 35 come up with new ideas about 30% more frequently than designers aged between 35 and 50.

Based on the above data, we need to come up with a conclusion, for the question asks "This data clearly suggests that________"

Even before looking at the answer choices, the conclusion has to be something related to using experience as a factor in hiring new employees and the fact that younger people come up with new ideas more frequently.

Let's look at the answer choices:

A: the success of a design firm is based completely on its staff since the product it provides is creativity itself - this is a very generic answer choice and doesn't really complete the argument based on the data given. Eliminate

B: designers after the age of 45 are usually in positions of management, and not in those requiring creative problem-solving - This option ignores the designers between ages 35 and 45. It talks only about designers after the age of 45. Also, according to this option, designers after the age of 45 aren't required to think creatively. It is not that they cannot think creatively. Eliminate

C: within the said age groups, older designers, thanks to their acquired experience and style, are more creative than younger designers - This option is against the data given to us. Younger designers are more creative (coming up with new ideas) than older designers. Eliminate

D: designers with less than ten years of experience are more creative than designers with more than ten years of experience - From the given data, we only know the ages of the designers. We have no data on their number of years of experience. There is no guarantee that a 35 year old designer will have 10 years or more of experience, that too in the particular field. Eliminate

E: design firms should be more open-minded when considering the employment of recently graduated designers - This is the correct answer choice. Since the stimulus progresses from mentioning that design firms place heavy emphasis on previous experience to the fact that younger designers come up with new ideas about 30% more frequently than older designers, the logical conclusion would be that design firms should also consider freshers/people with lesser experience
