Which of the following equals the average of x and 1/x ?

(A) (x + 2)/x

(B) (x^2 + 1)/(2x)

(C) (x + 1)/x^2

(D) (2x^2 + 1)/x

(E) (x + 1)/x

the average of x and 1/x ==> \((x+(1/x))/2\) ===> \((x^2 + 1)/(2x)\)

sum of terms = x+1/x = (x^2+1)/x

number of terms = 2

So average = 1/2*((x^2+1)/x )

The average of x and 1/x is:

(x + 1/x)/2 = (x^2/x + 1/x)/2 = [(x^2 + 1)/x]/2 = (x^2 + 1)/(2x)
