Maybe someone could help me out with this. Why is the official answer the best answer?

A, B, C and D - The easiest error to spot is the pronoun error - "they" or "their" doesn't match the singular antecedent "army". (Also supported by the usage of "it" outside the underlined part)

Very simple ... Napoleon's Army is a collective noun so considered a singular.
Also E is parallel i.e for any previous campaign , ... for only twenty-four days.

So E is the best ans.
