Hi all!

I have a question as follows.
I've posted the same question in the GRE Prep club, but I'm curious what the GMAT-folks say about this discrepancy

ETS gives us a GRE to GMAT score conversion tool that gives out, for example, Q163 V163 on the GRE equals to Q44 V39 Scaled 690 on the GMAT. So do other third-party sources such as Target Test Prep.

Sadly, on the other hand, GMAT doesn't seem to hand out such tools to compare its score vs. other tests, bummer.

However, if we see the actual score on business school websites, I couldn't help but think that the conversion is somewhat wrong.

Given that, shouldn't it be the case that Q163 V163 on the GRE equates to 730 on the GMAT and not 690?

Hi r_putra_rp,

Such tools are generally not very reliable. Even percentiles, for example, may not be comparable.

1. Test 1 tests basic (school-level) math concepts.
2. A different test, test 2, is designed for and taken by rocket scientists.

If someone gets a 80% score on test 1, is he or she better at math than someone who gets a 40% on test 2? Maybe everyone who took test 2 would get a perfect or close to perfect score on test 1.

I haven't gone through ETS's notes recently, but their methodology was definitely not perfect when the tool was introduced.

TL;DR: The ETS tool is easy to use, but its output may not be very reliable.

Hi r_putra_rp,

I actually would not worry about the conversions but rather the averages of the GMAT and GRE scores at your desired schools.
