The structure "with" + [noun] + [participle] is a confusing one on the GMAT SC, sometimes totally wrong and sometimes acceptable. For a full discussion of how to work with this confusing structure, see:

Thank you for posting the question Mike

Let's solve this one
pronouns, pronouns, and one more time pronouns!

(A) With Arcsun Corporation announcing their new home video system, Playlite has to upgrade their systems to compete with them
AC is singurlar, but their is plural - nope!
P is singular while their is plural - nope!
to compete with whom? them? but who them refers to? there is a mistake here!!!

(B) With Arcsun Corporation announcing its new home video system, Playlite must upgrade their systems in competition with it
ITS - mm good
Their - antecedent Playlite - do not agree in number

(C) Because Arcsun Corporation is announcing their new home video system, Playlite has to upgrade its own systems by competing with them
again their/them

(D) Since Arcsun Corporation is announcing their new home video system, Playlite is to upgrade their systems by competing with them
this one is a disaster.
Playlite is to...
BY competing -
their/them -

(E) Since Arcsun Corporation has announced its new home video system, Playlite must upgrade its own systems to compete with Arcsun
looks good. best answer choice, although it might appear that MUST changes the meaning of the sentence.

Thank you for the question and the explanation. =)

I was wondering about tense issues regarding (C) and (D): (C) says "Because Arcsun Corporation is announcing their new home video system, Playlite has to upgrade its own systems by competing with them; (D) says "Since Arcsun Corporation is announcing their new home video system, Playlite is to upgrade their systems by competing with them."
Compared to the right answer (E)(Since ... has announced..., ...must...), is there any preference among these three? Or all of them are just fine?

Given options are wrong for highlighted reason -

(A) With Arcsun Corporation announcing their new home video system, Playlite has to upgrade their systems to compete with them

(B) With Arcsun Corporation announcing its new home video system, Playlite must upgrade their systems in competition with it - we need unambiguous antecedent

(C) Because Arcsun Corporation is announcing their new home video system, Playlite has to upgrade its own systems by competing with them

(D) Since Arcsun Corporation is announcing their new home video system, Playlite is to upgrade their systems by competing with them

(E) Since Arcsun Corporation has announced its new home video system, Playlite must upgrade its own systems to compete with Arcsun - Correct

I think everyone has discussed the pronoun aspect of this question and moreover the "with" rule has also been covered. There is one thing left by looking at the sentence don't we feel that a conditional verb should be used in the second part of the sentence. That would make it more precise.

Could you kindly elucidate, whether this sentence is conditional, if so what is the conditional marker, and what conditional verb is most appropriate in the context? Perhaps, if you write down the entire sentence, it might become clear

Let's look at one simple factor. The corporation each is singular. Therefore, any use of the plural pronoun 'their' to refer any one of them is grammatically wrong. You will find choices A, B, C, and D indulge in this misdemeanor. E is error-free at first sight.
