I think it's a tie between C and E, really. I think it should be the former because it is more concise.

will go with C,

the first part modifies 'United States citizens', thus A,B and D should not be used. C vs E,

E seems redundant, it has 'although', even without 'although' sentence would be complete, meanwhile C is concise.

The OA here is E

well, it makes sense..

people can not be 5%, but people can account for 5%

agree with OA, but 'althoug' is still redundant, i guess that is the trap

I think what the statement conveys is the fact that the US accounts for more than its share of (all things mentioned) but accounts for only 5% of the population.C just just makes a plain statement rather than signify the above fact. C would be okay if we acknowledge that the higher percentages of emission etc. are okay even though the US accounts for only 5% of the population.

E mentions this fact with the help of *Although*. I don't think *Although* is redundant.
I would go with E.

Acounting for only 5 percent of the world’s population, United States citizens consume 28 percent of its nonrenewable resources, drive more than one-third of its automobiles, and use 21 times more water per capita than Europeans do.

Without 'although' the meaning of the sentence is clear, because there is already word 'only', 'although' does not make the meaning clearer, thus it is redundant. 'Although' would be necessary if there were no 'only'.

E is the right answer cause it is the best among given choices.
