First Split: any European country vs any other European country. The latter is correct because the UK is also an European country

A. With some of the busiest airports and ports in Europe, the United Kingdom has far more invasive species of certain types than does any European country.
B. As some of the busiest airports and ports in Europe, the United Kingdom has far more invasive species of certain types than does any other European country.
C. Because of some of the busiest airports and ports in Europe, the United Kingdom has far more invasive species of certain types than does any European country.
D. With some of the busiest airports and ports in Europe, the United Kingdom has far more invasive species of certain types than does any other European country.
E. Because it has some of the busiest airports and ports in Europe, the United Kingdom has far more invasive species of certain types than any European country does.

---

B. As some of the busiest airports and ports in Europe, the United Kingdom has far more invasive species of certain types than does any other European country.
The United Kingdom is not airports and ports (whatever that sentence means :) ).

D. With some of the busiest airports and ports in Europe, the United Kingdom has far more invasive species of certain types than does any other European country.

Thus, option D.

Hey daboo343,

I feel that something is amiss in the latter part of the sentence (portion after the comma); however, let's just focus on the intended use of the with phrase since that is where you are confused.

So, let's try an alternate sentence:

With a 740 on the GMAT, Jane is likely to get admitted in a top B-school.

Now, the above sentence is rather simple and of course not GMAT like. However, the construction is very similar to the sentence you have at hand - the intended use of with phrase is intact.

So, as you can see, the with phrase gives you a reason for what follows after the comma. It's on the basis of the 740 score, that the author makes a prediction about Jane's admission.

Now, if you want a grammatical term for the with phrase, then it is simply a prepositional phrase modifier. However, I do not think that knowing the term itself will make much of a difference. :)

Do let me know if you have nay other queries.

Cheers!

VERITAS PREP OFFICIAL SOLUTION:

This problem (like many others) tests logical meaning. Note the use of the word "other" in choices B and D, and compare that to the usage in A/C/E. Can the UK have more invasive species than any European country, when it is a European country itself? Logically, no - it can have the most of any country in Europe, but not more than any country. The best it can do is "tie" itself. So this sentence requires the use of "other" to be logically correct.

Then notice the major difference between B and D. The UK has some of the busiest (air)ports, but it is not itself the busiest airports and ports. So B is illogical, meaning that D must be the correct answer.
