Hi,
I am 28 and applying to enroll in Fall, 2007. What do you think my odds are at the following school? What are my weaknesses and how can I build on them to increase my chances?
I am applying to: Wharton, Harvard, Stanford, Chicago, Northwestern, Dartmouth, and Thunderbird (I live in AZ and this is my fallback).
My GMAT is a 710
Over the last three years I have earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation
Work experience: I have worked at the same company out of college for 5.5 years. The company is a hi-tech software company where I began as a Finance and Marketing analyst. I worked for the CFO were i learned accounting and corporate finance. I grew that practice out and became controller while learning about technology, sales, marketing, and management. I began doing operations and fulfillment and later moved into business development as the manager of operations and strategy. In this position i am responsible for sales operations, strategy, pricing, major projects (product rollouts, etc), and our major program management (managing everything from capture to proposal to the whole sales and marketing function when we win the program). This involves matrix and direct management of large teams and interoperability with other large prime teams....
School: Graduated U. of Florida in summer 2000. BSBA with dual major in Finance and Economics. Graduated with high honors and a 3.78 GPA and a 4.0 GPA in both majors.
Extracurricular and leadership: In college I was a member of Golden Key National Honor Society and in economics club. I founded and ran my own media company producing radio and television shows in Gainesville (this consumed all free time). I managed 8 - 12 people in this endeavor.
I am currently one of 5 leading board members for the phoenix chapter of the International active 20/30 club - a children's charity organization. Last year I took over our largest fundraiser to save it from peril and became the head of Public Relations and restaurants in an effort to save the event. I was also our lead ticket salesman. I am currently the head of community activities including strategic development. I am also a member of Scottsdale Boys and Girls where i frequent to help kids have a better life. I am a member of the Phoenix society for investment professionals. I am a lead committee member for the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce's economic development council, and I serve as a lead committe member on Arizona Technology Council's business development growth panel.
I am a triathlete.
Career goal: I want to marry my finance background and analytical mind with my love of economics and strategy in an International Private Equity or International M&A career. I feel one embarking on a career must consider doing it with an international focus given the great advances in globalization. I belive this is the beginining and one must be ready to compete with a global employee pool for global clients, as well as to hedge risk of their home country not always being the dominant international player. PE and M&A marry together strategy, deal-making, and finance - put this in an international framework and I am fat and happy.
I have begun taking Mandarin Chinese (privately) with the intent on an intermediate proficiency when i graduate MBA in 3 years. I have also begun reading and learning about the culture of India and China.
thank you very much!
Ross
