Hi guys I have been accepted to yale som and michigan ross, and am having trouble deciding over two schools. I am interested in pursuing career in consulting.

I know michigan has a history of being in top ten and has a large alumni network, but yale has its brand name and has been going up in ranking recently.

Which school should I choose?

Hey There,

Congratulations on being admitted to two fantastic schools! You should be proud because I know how competitive both are!

To best answer your question - what sort of interests do you have in recruiting? What are your concerns about each school? Is there something you're particularly looking for in a B-school?

Let us know!

Hey guys, I too am struggling to choose between Yale Som and Ross (25% fee waiver). Post Mba goal is Management Consulting.

Both schools are great and I am really confused on how to decide. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

These are more or less peer schools. I'd advise visiting both and going where you forsee yourself being most comfortable/at home - you'll do better where you feel better.

Ah, SOM vs Ross.

Both schools have great consulting stats, so you'll get in front of all the main firms if that's what you're going for. If you want to do something more niche, definitely look at placement stats to see what firms recruit for. Also, do think about where you want to end up geography wise; the split is a little different between the two schools.

Ultimately this does come down to fit as revul mentioned. I personally struggled with this decision a lot. For someone who didn't ultimately choose to attend Ross, I have a very strong positive view of the school and have encouraged a lot of people to look into the program. Attend the admitted student weekends if you can (and hopefully they're not on the same weekend again....); IMO the business school personalities have many similar qualities but the parent universities are quite different. You'll want to see where you fit best with the overall culture of school as well as your classmates. The schools' students as a whole have varying interests -- not only in terms of career placement -- so you'll want to see who you want to be around with for your business school journey.

PM me if you want to chat further.

Fit is key here but to help give you more of a concrete opinion. Ross has the better reputation and probably puts more people into consulting than Yale as well. The student community at Ross is also fantastic if that is something that is important to you. I lean Ross here

Where do you want to live post MBA? Where do you want to live during your MBA?

The culture and style of these programs is quite different. This is a rare situation where I think you should go with fit. They are very close in rankings and have similar consulting stats. Both will get you consulting opportunities which is all you can really control at this stage.

Hey C72 I think Ross will have better MBB recruiting at this point then Yale. Many of the top firms have huge Chicago offices which they use to recruit heavily from midwest programs like Ross and Kellogg. Offices out west outside of SF tend to take fewer candidates than their midwest and east coast offices so keep this in mind as well

Visit both schools. Here are some variables that I can add to this discussion. The inverted case method of Yale is potentially one of the reasons it's pretty much kicking ass these days. I see that as an attractive draw for MBB. However my impression of Yale is that it's kind of serious and boring. And believe that fit really has a lot to do with your success in business school. I think it would be a good idea to talk to alumni who are doing the jobs that you want to be doing from both schools and see who resonates with you.

MBAPrepCoach, I think this is my favorite quotation on this site in recent memory.

But seriously, everyone has their own impressions and their own ideas of what type of an educational environment works best for them.
Take the time to visit, talk to current students, and get a sense if Ross or SOM is a better place for you to thrive.

Btw, did you make a final decision? Orientation is coming up soon...

Considering that I've been in these videos, yes, yes I've watched them. I actually rather like them. Different strokes for different folks it seems.

Fuqua and Ross both great programs, with Fuqua probably having a slightly stronger reputation but both programs have similar cultures if that is important to you. On the consulting side i believe Ross will probably give you a benefit on the consulting recruiting with its access to bigger consulting offices

@LindaMerrill what would you like to compare? I do think the cultures are similar but I think that Duke is even more of a rally type environment, I don't see quiet introverts doing too well there. Healthcare MBA emphasis. In a far more desirable area climate-wise haha. Ie no snow & not from the beach.

Ross is very focused on action learning, meaning experiential learning as opposed to lecture and case-based learning. And recently made it to the top of the list for having a strong showing in all specialization areas.

The team orientation is super important at Duke, and almost just as much at Ross. There is a team exercise that is part of the evaluation at Ross.

I think a lot of people are turned off by the idea of moving to Ann Arbor, but it's just another cool college town with plenty of culture and a growing foodie base. Plus, it's only 21 months, 18 if you intern elsewhere.

And the Alumni network is second to none.

Both Duke and Ross are known as Consulting schools the relatively Global orientation.
