I am thinking of going into consumer-focused VC/PE after b-school.
Can't really tell which school is a better fit because I didn't have the chance to spend time at SOM.
Given the ranking and class size, SOM seems better but did love Tuck during my visit.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Look at their employment reports, Yale seems the better choice.
Now very few start at VC/PE straight out of MBA, they work in IB and then get into VC/PE So, i feel it’s important to also look at the reflected glory and Yale network built from the undergrad program, law, drama (highly regarded drama school) and other schools.

Hello nangrang

I personally would got o Yale

Of course you loved Tuck during visit, this is exactly what they sell: culture.

How come you didn't apply to business schools in California, since you are interested in VC/PE ?

Bloomberg did rankings based on survey of 26,699 MBA students, alumni, and recruiters in 2018 about their goals and experiences, as well as compensation and job-placement data from each school, Yale comes as 12. vs. Tuck being 20. :

https://www.bloomberg.com/business-schools/2018/

Here are organizations that hire from Yale:

https://som.yale.edu/programs/mba/caree ... anizations

Yale MBA Employment Report and Alimni network opportuniy:

https://som.yale.edu/programs/mba/caree ... ent-report

https://som.yale.edu/programs/mba/caree ... ni-network

These are companies that hire at Tuck:

https://www.tuck.dartmouth.edu/mba/care ... -companies

Tuck Employment report:

https://www.tuck.dartmouth.edu/uploads/ ... report.pdf

Both schools mention 2% of their graduates going into Private Equity by sector, you should dive in for more relevant info in those statistics, that will help you to decide.

Good Luck

I agree, culture is overrated. Specially after I interacted with a few from Ross and Tuck this past year. It’s post MBA jobs and network that matters and not so much of the culture.

Congratulations on your admits!!!

I can see Yale being a better known name globally and your aunt and uncle would know them, unlike Tuck.
In general, I feel most people tend to favor Tuck for its close knit community and alum network.

Good Luck!

Let me know if you wanna chat. Had to make this choice too. Talk to people who are in those industries from those schools, don't just look at rankings... Also, it is very overlooked to not place importance on the location, so I'd give that done thought. I love both of these schools.

Congrats and great options. Decided among these schools too--I wouldn't read too much into recent rankings. In fact, if anything, Tuck was considered the stronger program up until VERY recently. They are very much peers, but neither is strong in PE/VC. Given this, would you consider IB as a back up/first step?

People split this differently all the time, I'd go with where you think you'll have the best experience. SOM borrows the "Yale" brand but the program itself is still up and coming. Tuck typically stands alone and has a rich alumni network and a strong and steady tradition. No wrong answer here.

Thank you for the reply.
Given that I have no previous exposure to PE or VC, I am considering either IB or consulting as a stepping stone. I know Tuck is strong in that matter but not sure about SOM.
Any thoughts would be super helpful!
