Consultant: Taniel Chan

About Taniel:

I had an absolutely amazing time working with Taniel, and he is the most responsible and caring advisor that I have ever worked with. It's amazing how much time he devotes to my application given all his other commitments. He always provides very high-quality and timely feedback, and he is highly responsive even when he is traveling on a different continent! I cannot remember a single time when he doesn't respond within 24 hours. And when I am confused about his feedback, he is always willing to hop on the phone to make clarifications.

He is clearly very experienced with the b-school process and has unique insights into the program I was applying to. I think the best thing about Taniel is that he doesn't just say something is not right, but he discusses with me and helps me figure out what is right and how I can improve. During this process, I always feel like I am in good hands and it's amazing to see how my application has evolved!

B-school application can be stressful, but Taniel always checks in to see how I feel about this process and gives me a lot of encouragement. He respects my schedule and never rushes me, and I can always work in a pace that I feel comfortable with.

Although I didn't end up getting into the program I was applying to, I thoroughly enjoyed working with Taniel. I can't imagine working with a better school consultant and I would recommend him to my friends without any reservation!

Veritas Prep Team:

Veritas Prep has a very professional client service team. They always reply to my inquiries in a very timely and professional manner. Once I had some technical difficulties accessing some of the gmat prep materials online, and they gave me all the practice tests for free!

School Specialist:

I am very sorry to say that my interaction with my school specialist was below my expectations. I did my first strategy call with her only two weeks before the application deadline, and that was after I reached out to Veritas Prep team myself. She offered some very good advice on campus visits and recommendation strategies , but unfortunately they were no longer helpful at such a late stage of the application process. From the school package description online, I thought school specialist would be pretty involved in my application, but our interaction was limited to a 45 minute strategy call and one essay edit. I was turned down when I asked for additional essay feedback because she said it would be unfair to other clients. Apparently school specialists are only expected to make a 1 hour strategy call, one essay edit and one mock interview for each client. Maybe this was my bad, but from reading the package descriptions online, I had no idea that the help from school specialist would be so tangential.

Consultant: Blake Street

- Received admission with scholarship from Haas (target school, engaged Blake as the consultant).
- Beside, received the offer from 3 out 4 schools applied

I pondered the question whether i should engage consultant for long time too. From my experience, that will help if you face the same challenge as I used to:
- No experience on American school application which look at the holistic overview of candidate, not just based on the score/test result
- Being too humble (yes im serious, this is a typical East Asian 'problem' that I discovered thru consultation sessions)
- Also, please dont expect your consultant to be essays writers. They are there to help you discover ourselves by giving advice and asking right questions, knowing yourself very well will be the key to pass the Interview.

Blake was my main consultant for Haas application, who was exceptional in any aspect and had a great understanding on international student from Asia like me:
1. He was not just an admission consultant, more like a career coach
- If you make up your mind and go for consultation service, my advice is: engage early.
- Blake at the start spent time to make sure i was clear about my career goal, and encouraged me to fill in the gap since we had about 5 months away from deadline. I think it was the deciding factor of my success

2. Blake gave courage
- I was struggling to get >720 GMAT score at first (the Haas average: 717). Honestly, every time I failed, the call with Blake made me feel much better and picked myself up for another trial.
- One time Blake had a hear-to-heart conversation with me, when he recalled his own struggle with GMAT. I thought it was very touching: and at the next time i finally got 730 after 4 times of trying.

3. Blake asked great questions
- I think this is the greatest quality of a consultant: help us to discover mistake, be better by asking us questions
- By asking right questions: he helped me to discover a better way to handle the essay question, be crystal clear about WHAT and WHY Ive done, doing and will do things. Guys, it's super important so I need to repeat it twice: with clear understanding not just WHAT but WHY, you will ace your interview easily.

Nitin was my second consultant for application review and mock interview. I would like to recommend Nitin for 2 reasons:
1. Nitin gives professional feedback
- Although I have gone through the application and mock interviews with lots of my friends, none could be compared to Nitin as he gave much more constructive and very practical feedback
- As the competition is tough, good feedback is more important than anything else

2. Nitin always reminded me about the big picture
- Nitin came in as the final touch point before big day: application day or interview day, so he reminded me to take a step back and made sure i wouldn't lose my big picture: my long term and short term target, my strengths and i must focus on the strengths. Of course, he offered some examples on how I should do it.
- I think such advice is the key to differentiate me and other candidates.

Consultant: Sophie

I began my business school application in early January and worked with Sophie of Veritas Prep. To start, we had an introductory one-hour chat to go through all of my experiences and discuss why I was interested in applying to business school. In this chat, Sophie provided me with an assessment of my chances for admission and pointed out any red flags that could hurt my chances. This was very helpful as it gave me an idea for what to discuss in the additional essay or include in the essay. I was also able to vet my preliminary ideas for the essay to see what resonated most with her/was most appropriate for a business school application.

After this discussion, I was equipped with the knowledge to take an educated stab at the essay. In my first draft, I fleshed out a few different ideas with all relevant context and shot it over to Sophie. Sophie provided clear, detailed feedback on everything I provided and suggested that I focus the essay on one particular experience that really stood out to her. Getting this clear feedback early-on allowed me to throw out the ten other ideas I was juggling and instead focus on just one. From this point onward, I continued to utilize the story of one experience to showcase my interest in business school, what I would get out of it, and why/how I would add value to a classroom discussion. Throughout the editing process, Sophie continually encouraged me to maintain the story-feel of the essay and interject anecdotes that would tie into my reasons for applying. Working hard and following Sophie’s advice, I was able to finish my essay in about two months.

Looking back, the investment made in admissions consulting was totally worth it. Even with a fantastic GMAT score, you have no shot at admission if your essay is not both cogent and authentic. Sophie provided me with the confidence and guidance that I needed to complete the application process in a timely fashion.

Consultant: Dakotah Eddy

It was around this time last year that I decided I would apply for an MBA, preferably in Round 1, but didn't know where to start. I first reached out to Veritas Prep (VP) to understand how they could support my application. I elected to go with the two school package with Veritas Prep, and through my initial discussion with the first VP contact and my MBTI assessment, they matched me with Dakotah. I was very nervous re: whether it would be worth the money (the cost is very high, and was paid with great difficulty on my end). Having said that, at the risk of sounding incredibly cheesy, it felt as though I had an old friend guiding me through the application process – she was nothing short of amazing.

Despite my constant dithering (particularly when it came to choosing which two schools I would select for my package) and pretty flagrant disorganization at the start of our working relationship (driven by the crazy hours of my job), she remained friendly, patient and supportive– but was unafraid of being direct if I was taking the piss! Dakotah balanced the professional element of her role (essentially building a project plan and timeline for GMAT, essays, etc.) and the personal (making the application process more of a fun exercise in personal reflection and intellectual challenge – as it should be!). Importantly, when it came to telling my personal story about my family and how they shaped my personal / career success in my essays, she gave me the guidance to help me tell it in the right way (i.e. without being trite or inauthentic) and ensured my essays were always that – my essays, in my voice. She was also committed to my personal goal of submitting my applications to my reach schools in Round 1; rather than delivering a boilerplate "sorry, but we need 24-48hrs to review and give feedback", she turned around my essays quickly (sometimes in the same day, which is a feat in itself given the 5hr time difference - I'm based in the UK, she in NYC!), ensuring I submitted both applications in time. In short, having entered this process wondering if I was spending far too much with VP, I reached a point where I would wholeheartedly recommend them (especially Dakotah) to anyone looking for support in their MBA application.

VP also offer specialist consultants to give you guidance re: what the schools look for in applicants, review and critique your essays, and conduct a mock interview. Andreea (HBS) was very professional, and did seem invested in my success. She was also supportive and flexible in accommodating my schedule (again, 5hr time difference). During our first call, she ensured I got full value from it despite a delay on my end at short notice. With regards to school specific support, some of it seemed relatively generic, though I will concede that perhaps that is because I'd already spent hours poring over the HBS website and their webinars. What I found most valuable were her anecdotes re: her own experience (both good and bad) and ideas re: how to package my personal 'brand' into a format that would fit the (quite vague) HBS essay. The one area where she fell short was her relative lack of communication when I was invited to interview at HBS – and given my nervousness and short turnaround time to prep, this was a tad frustrating (though Dakotah quickly arranged for someone else to interview me within 48hrs). Overall, I was pleased with Andreea, though it did feel much more transactional (at least, compared to Dakotah, so perhaps an unfair comparison given that that may simply be a stylistic difference).

Caleb was my specialist for Stanford GSB, and he blew me away. He mentioned at the start of our first call that he genuinely enjoyed hearing about applicants' plans and ambitions to help them achieve their goals, and I truly believe it. He seemed genuinely excited to hear about me, my plans, and actually listened: his follow-up email was written in a way that suggested he took the time to sit down and reflect on what we'd said during our call (vs. whipping out a template and filling it in). Not only did he capture notes re: what we agreed would be best way to align my personality / ambitions to what Stanford looks for, but he went far above and beyond what was expected, adding extensive thoughts on GSB resources & classes that I might find interesting/useful (which I did – it sent me down a rabbit hole in the GSB course catalogue!). He also had great insights on the school culture, good and bad. Finally, his feedback was thoughtful (and he was very responsive when it came to any follow up questions).

All in all, I would wholeheartedly recommend VP.

Which schools and how many should I apply to? What do I write in the essay? How do I prep for the GMAT?... These are some of the questions that popped in my head. I didn't know prepping would take such an amount of energy. It was tiring and time consuming... This is where Veritas helped me.. Veritas specialists helped me zone in what I needed to focus on. They helped me to identify my strengths, weaknesses, and goals and recommended me the best schools that suits me the best. Best part? I got in to my dream school! :) Thanks!

Consultant: Taniel Chan

I initially used VP for GMAT prep and had a good experience so I went back to them for hourly admissions consulting services. After screening my background, interests and goals, VP paired me with Taniel Chan.

Taniel was a huge help throughout my entire application process. He was highly responsive when I needed his guidance and always provided insightful comments to help me stand out from the crowd. His personal experience of the application process was extremely useful.

I have a hectic work schedule and without Taniel's guidance on my application personal story and strategy, my acceptance to a top school would have been significantly harder.

If I had to do it over again, I would absolutely pick Taniel Chan. I would highly recommend his help and VP for anyone considering personalized consulting services.

Taniel was very helpful during the entire process. He provided a framework for me to develop my essay and engaged with me constantly to fine-tune my narrative. With extremely quick turnover times, he was able to proofread my essays and provide valuable feedback across all aspects of the application.

When i started off thinking about the essays, I was all over the place due to the open ended nature of the questions. But Taniel did extensive brainstorming sessions with me to go over all my anecdotes and my career goals.

I have not received any notifications yet, but I am very happy with my overall application. Taniel and Veritas Prep did a wonderful job. I would definitely recommend them.

Consultant: Dia Draper

At first, I was reluctant to engage an MBA admissions consultant. Being someone who is well organized and knew his “why MBA” story, an admissions consultant seemed unnecessary. I could not have been more wrong. After watching Dia’s Ted Talks ( , I knew that if I was going to use a consultant she was going to be it. Six months later, I have been admitted to Duke Fuqua, NYU Stern, Virginia Darden, UNC Kenan-Flagler, Texas McCombs and USC Marshall. I will be attending Darden on a scholarship next fall. While hard work and preparation helped me yield these results, Dia was the magic touch that ensured I marketed myself in the right way to each program.

Throughout the process I learned that schools don’t just want GPA, GMAT and brand name firms---they want to know who you are and that their program can actually help you achieve your long-term goals. Having many friends that went through this MBA application cycle with less than favorable results, I will be the first to tell you that I 100% believe that the MBA brand, essays and strategies that Dia helped me develop made the difference.

After submitting my first draft essays to Dia (I thought they were pretty good!), I received an email saying “Let’s connect….”. Within a day, Dia and I were on the phone discussing why I really wanted an MBA. Dia knew my non-traditional goal to go into Real Estate Development would meet scrutiny with AdComs, so she spent over an hour drilling down into why I wanted to pursue this career path. After multiple draft revisions, I had a concise and powerful essay. It was from this conversation that I delivered my programs with the strongest essays possible and was able to delivery my “why MBA” pitch without any reluctance. Specifically, this conversation paid off at NYU when the first thing my interviewer told me was “you do not need an MBA. Prove to me why this makes sense”. From my multiple strategy sessions with Dia, I was able to deliver my pitch in a high-pressure situation seamlessly.

From day one, I was transparent with Dia that while my GPA, extracurriculars and WE were strong that my GMAT would be an issue. Via Dia’s experience in working at Tuck and Darden, she was able to provide real insight into how the AdCom would respond to my GMAT score. Anticipating that GMAT would be my Achilles heel, Dia created a strategy to show case that my quant skills are solid.

If I had to do this process again, I would use Dia any day. Beyond the admissions cycle, I know that Dia and I will remain in contact as she is just a great person in general.

Consultant: Nitin Agrawal

I got paired up with Nitin as my Head Consultant. Right after our first call I felt more confident with the process. Nitin was very good at keeping me on time for the deadlines and always gave me constructive feedback for my essays. My Resume was also improved a lot with his comments. He was able to identify my personality traits and profile to pair me up with some excellent school specialists, with who i really connected. I bought the three school package and applied for Stanford, MIT and Berkeley, i got a ding from Stanford and MIT and I have not heard back from Berkeley. Although i did not get accepted to Stanford and MIT, I am very staisfied with the service they provided. I knew that it was going to be hard due to my lack of work experience, which was mentioned by Nitin form the start. He told me that it was difficult, but I told him that i had made up my mind and that i wanted to apply to those three schools.
They have great attention and will answer any e-mail within 24 hours. They are always available and always willing to give the support you need when the process gets frustrating. I think that I sent the best application I could and not getting admitted was because of my profile. Definitely recommended.

Consultant: Taniel Chan

My experience with Veritas and Taniel as my consultant was nothing short of excellent.

I am the kind of person that likes to push things to their limit, so here I was 4 months before Round 3 deadline, having to take a GMAT and write my application. My work philosophy has always been to surround myself with smarter people, and that's exactly what I got from Veritas.

Taniel was reliable, fast to respond to any questions or concerns, proactive and well organised. He has drafted a comprehensive timeline of events, and offered all the help and feedback needed along the way to really share my story in a compelling and engaging way.

What I appreciate most about him is his ability to listen and truly understand my background, goals, and dreams, and help me turn dull facts into a story-like narrative. Instead of rushing through a checklist, his patience and systematic approach has lead to an application I was proud to submit.

With Taniel I never felt rushed by a timer, no matter if it was a Sunday morning, or he was going through a flu, he went above and beyond to make sure I'm successful. For his hard work, passion for helping others, and openness, he deserves my highest recommendation.
