Consultant: Read Flake

I am writing this review to give my strong recommendation for the work Veritas Prep did with strengthening my business school application. They helped me with GMAT prep, essay writing, and interview practice.

I started my 6 month business school application journey as a 30 year old mid career executive with 8 years of experience in a multinational consumer goods company. I did corporate strategic planning and had the opportunity of leading project management teams from Europe and Asia. I’ve had fairly good career progression and was lucky enough to be promoted every 2 years. But for me to continue along my accelerated career path, I needed to go t business school to update my leadership and business skills with the new developments in today’s changing environment. I was fairly confident of my resume and the recommendations I would get from my bosses, but I was definitely not feeling the same way about the GMAT and stringing together my story in essays that would do justice to the work experience I’ve accumulated thus far. I wanted to try and do things on my own first before tapping consultants so I attempted to self study first and writing initial drafts of my essays. After self - studying OG and Manhattan materials for 2 months, I decided to take my first crack at the GMAT and got a measly 550. On the other hand, the challenge I faced with essay writing was determining whether the material I have written was good or not. Family, colleagues, and bosses were quick to offer to proof read but they all had different opinions. From a GMAT prep and application preparation standpoint, I felt lost on how to move forward. After consulting with past MBA alumni, I decided to go with veritas prep. Here is how they helped me with each section of my application to ensure I put forward the best possible application given my timetable.

I. GMAT PREP WITH CHRIS SPECK

My biggest frustration with OG and manhattan prep material was there barely any information on strategy and how to efficiently solve problems, both for verbal and quant sections. The solutions presented would sometimes seem even more confusing than the problems themselves and were definitely something I could NOT solve with my “understanding of basic high school math and English”. At the end of the day, if you don’t understand the solutions you will then result to brute force and just spend more time to try and solve problems or memorize the solutions. Both strategies won’t help you in a computer adaptive test that will not let you see the same problems.

Chris Speck of veritas was exactly who I needed to help me demystify the GMAT and break things down as if we were starting from scratch. He introduced me to test taking strategies and would even correct my ways of thinking and common mistakes that most GMAT test takers would make. He was also able to help me structure my study plans to make it harder working and easier to track my progress to determine whether I was getting better or not. And the guy has scored 750+ on the GMAT in recent years so you can be confident he knows his stuff.

II. ESSAY WRITING WITH READ FLAKE

I mentioned that one of the challenges I faced with essay writing was determining which feedback to take. Veritas was able to find me a consultant who was from the admissions committee of Kellogg. After Read made a thorough review of my profile, we went through my essay drafts line by line, to the point of nitpicking. I found this level of detail very useful because he was able to point out specific sentences in my essays that would have made me otherwise seem unsure, contradicting, or vague in my examples. He spent time with me to probe my story for experiences that would be useful to really bring my case to life. We did not just settle for what I had already written.

Consultant: Richard Williams

This review is for both Rich Williams and Meenakshi Dash at Veritas.

I decided that I wanted to apply to bschools back in January 2014. I was nervous about the application process and knew I needed help from a consulting services company. After connecting with Veritas, I was quickly matched with Rich Williams. From our initial call, it was transparent to me Rich was passionate about helping candidates explore their full potential. Even before I started working on the application and was still studying for the GMAT test, Rich would set aside 1 hour a week to walk me through the nuances of the application process and answer my questions. Writing essays may seem like a daunting task but with Rich's help, I was able to breeze through it. We came up with a few possible topics and narrowed down to what we thought would make the best possible stories. Rich's timely and critical feedback helped me complete 2 applications that I was very satisfied with, in a tight time frame. I was admitted into 2 top bschools and was very happy with my experience with Rich! If you want a consultant who is smart, experienced and truly cares about your success, you won't go wrong with Rich Williams.

I was also very fortunate to have a chance to work with Meenakshi on my application for Chicago Booth. Meenakshi is an alum so she's very knowledgeable about what the school is looking for in a candidate. She helped me present my stories and background to create an application that I was very satisfied with. She was exceptionally creative, being able to discover the unusual from my background. I don't think I would be able to make my application as exciting without her help. She's also very personable and very pleasant to work with. With Meenakshi's help, I was admitted to Chicago Booth.

Consultant: Emily A

I was very happy with my experience with Emily! From our first conversation, I felt that we were on the same page and she understood my work style and time constraints. We used our time to focus mainly on essay questions and she provided me with the feedback that I needed to get into my first choice school. Emily helped me to shape my story by first brainstorming essay prompts and then through very specific recommendations and constructive feedback. Her school-specific guidance was also extremely helpful in further refining my application. Emily is very professional and responsive. She helped demystify the process and the experience was exactly what I needed to get accepted. Highly recommended!!

Consultant: Neil Chong

Neil provided the guidance I needed to get into my first choice school. I was initially overwhelmed with the whole application process, I went to an undergraduate program that didn’t require an essay and my non-traditional background made it difficult for me “brand’ myself. Neil focused on my strengths and helped me put them in the best light, as well as identified areas of weakness I would need to address. Neil quickly responded to all my questions and concerns with clear direction and patience and was motivational in the interview process when I was having doubts about my abilities to impress the admissions staff. I had a strong undergrad gpa but needed to retake my gmat score to become a more competitive applicant so we structured a plan where I could apply for schools in my current GMAT range and possible increased score. I was able to increase my GMAT score significantly and was accepted to 5 of the 6 schools that I applied to, all with generous scholarships of over $50,000

I wouldn’t have been able to put forth such a compelling application without Neil and cant recommend him enough.

Consultant: Emily A

Among all the consultants, I specifically chose Emily because of her profile that matches my needs : intenational students, older applicants, finance and entrepreneurship.
I was extremely happy to work with Emily. She is a great listener, very reactive and very focused on the result we were trying to achieve.
I started the process by applying to one school and ended a applying to two schools. I was succesfully admitted to both (2 top schools). I don't think it would have not been possible without Emily's help.
I very much appreciated her honesty and candidness that fully benefited me. She is truly a great consultant, very committed and I will highly recomend her.

Consultant: Taniel Chan

Having unexpectedly received an interview for HBS, I decided to seek some professional advice for the interview itself, and contacted Veritas Prep, who put me in touch with Taniel.

Despite being in the middle of his exam week, Taniel was extremely helpful and responsive to my messages at short notice.

Taniel's extensive experience and advice were invaluable in helping to situate the mentality of the interviewer, and bringing out the best mentality for the interviewee. We went through a series of mock interviews, and I was given feedback on improving the logical flow of each answer, as well as general advice about Harvard and the MBA program.

I would definitely recommend Taniel's help for anyone interested in advice and help for their MBA applications.

Consultant: Sophie

I began my business school application in early January and worked with Sophie of Veritas Prep. To start, we had an introductory one-hour chat to go through all of my experiences and discuss why I was interested in applying to business school. In this chat, Sophie provided me with an assessment of my chances for admission and pointed out any red flags that could hurt my chances. This was very helpful as it gave me an idea for what to discuss in the additional essay or include in the essay. I was also able to vet my preliminary ideas for the essay to see what resonated most with her/was most appropriate for a business school application.

After this discussion, I was equipped with the knowledge to take an educated stab at the essay. In my first draft, I fleshed out a few different ideas with all relevant context and shot it over to Sophie. Sophie provided clear, detailed feedback on everything I provided and suggested that I focus the essay on one particular experience that really stood out to her. Getting this clear feedback early-on allowed me to throw out the ten other ideas I was juggling and instead focus on just one. From this point onward, I continued to utilize the story of one experience to showcase my interest in business school, what I would get out of it, and why/how I would add value to a classroom discussion. Throughout the editing process, Sophie continually encouraged me to maintain the story-feel of the essay and interject anecdotes that would tie into my reasons for applying. Working hard and following Sophie’s advice, I was able to finish my essay in about two months.

Looking back, the investment made in admissions consulting was totally worth it. Even with a fantastic GMAT score, you have no shot at admission if your essay is not both cogent and authentic. Sophie provided me with the confidence and guidance that I needed to complete the application process in a timely fashion.

Consultant: Taniel Chan

I initially used VP for GMAT prep and had a good experience so I went back to them for hourly admissions consulting services. After screening my background, interests and goals, VP paired me with Taniel Chan.

Taniel was a huge help throughout my entire application process. He was highly responsive when I needed his guidance and always provided insightful comments to help me stand out from the crowd. His personal experience of the application process was extremely useful.

I have a hectic work schedule and without Taniel's guidance on my application personal story and strategy, my acceptance to a top school would have been significantly harder.

If I had to do it over again, I would absolutely pick Taniel Chan. I would highly recommend his help and VP for anyone considering personalized consulting services.

Consultant: Manisha Shahane

Veritas provides a variety of services that I found helpful. MBA applications are extremely stressful and for someone like me that didn't take such an intensive approach during my undergraduate application process the whole thing can quickly become overwhelming.

Manisha was extremely thorough and worked to guide me in crafting a clear and concise story for my application. Coming from a "non traditional" background with a lower GMAT and GPA crafting a good story and highlighting my work experience was essential. She was always responsive, helped to ask the right questions, and supported me through the process despite my tight timeline and request for quick revisions. Her input added a lot of value to my end product and I wouldn't hesitate in recommending her.

I am a re applicant for most of the B Schools this year and I was really worried about my application process.I really needed some one who would understand my needs, gauge my weakness and guide me on that. Neil proved the one for me. Even though I had taken a 10hours package, Neil never counted the time we spend on my application and he helped me on my resume and essay for 8-9 schools. He was always their for me when I needed his feedback on my essays or choosing the program which would fit my profile. The best part was his patience which is very rare with admission consultants now a days. His suggestions definitely helped me in my admission and I will definitely recommend him.
