Thanks for sharing your profile and MBA aspirations. My name is Priyanka, Client Manager at ARINGO.

Your career goals look fine since it is a logical extension of what you are doing presently. As you have quite extensive work experience, your profile is suitable for - MBAs for mid-career professionals (https://www.aringo.com/mba-over-30/) or EMBA programs (https://aringo.com/best-emba-program/). We have a dedicated EMBA Team (https://aringo.com/the-emba-team/) here at ARINGO that would love to help you with these applications.

A lot of details are missing like your undergrad institute, impact of your work, promotions, extracurriculars, etc. in the given information, so if you send me your CV and other info on priyankak@ARINGO.com , I would love to connect you with our CEO who will be happy to help further with a detailed review and perhaps work together on some amazing apps.

I have been working in a medium scale pharmaceutical manufacturing industry as a Quality Assurance Manager. While the job is satisfying, I would like to move to a different field all together as I fell in love with data science and Artificial intelligence after doing a few courses. My short term goals post MBA would be to change my stream. In the long run, I want to get into the core of said fields and help solve traditional problems in the world using my skills.

Hi @ashura9999,

Thanks for sharing your profile and MBA aspirations. My name is Priyanka, Client Manager at ARINGO.

Strengths of your profile for MBA application:
• Work experience: Having 6.3 years of experience, especially in a leadership role as a Quality Assurance Manager, demonstrates responsibility and strong work ethic.
• Career transition: Your clear desire to move into data science and AI is admirable. Taking relevant courses shows initiative and genuine interest in the field.
• Post-MBA goals: Having both short-term and long-term goals demonstrates a well-defined career path.

Areas for Improvement and recommendations:
• GPA: A 3.0 GPA might be a concern for some top MBA programs. You can address this in your application essays by highlighting any academic achievements or improvements made during your undergraduate studies.
• GMAT score: While not mandatory for all programs, a strong GMAT score can significantly strengthen your application, especially for competitive schools. Aim for a score that demonstrates your quantitative abilities.
• Quantifiable achievements: Since you're transitioning careers, focus on highlighting transferable skills from your manufacturing experience. Highlight how your skills from Quality Assurance Management (e.g., problem-solving, analytical thinking, data analysis) can be applied to data science and AI.
• Network with professionals: Connect with data scientists and AI professionals to learn more about the field and gain insights. You can also do pro bono consulting in tech firms or related fields
• Strengthen your quant skills: Consider taking additional courses in statistics, programming, and other relevant quantitative areas before applying.

Overall, your profile has potential for an MBA application, especially with a clear desire to transition into a new field. By focusing on transferable skills, a strong GMAT score, and strengthening your data science skills, you can increase your chances of admission to a program that aligns with your career goals. If you send me your CV on priyankak@ARINGO.com , I would love to connect you with our CEO who will be happy to help further with a detailed review and perhaps work together on some amazing apps.

Your motivation to switch from QA in pharma to AI / data science in a tech organization may need more reinforcement than just a few courses. Think from the hiring companies point of view: Why should they hire you (beyond you having an MBA degree)? What skills from your pre-MBA career will be visibly portable to the new domains of your interest? Answers to some of these questions will help you position your MBA applications better. Of course, it will also help if you can get a very high GMAT score to offset your average / weak GPA. Over and above all this, you would need strong evidence of achievements, initiative, impact, etc., in your CV, essays, recommendations, etc. Last but not least (for now), your school selection will need to be sharper. You need to align your past, your strengths, and your goals with that of the schools.

Hi Dee. Thanks for your inputs.

I'm just beginning my research into doing an MBA so your inputs are very welcome. As a QA Manager, I have skills such as attention to detail, maintaining good documentation records, detailed analysis of products among others. This needs a lot of data which is why I started to get into AI / data science. I have been doing a few boot camps to learn more about Data science and have come to really like it. I wanted to pursue a masters in this field which would let me build upon my existing skills. I have been contributing to open source for a over a year now which simple projects. Could you give me advice on how to align these to position my application better? Also could you elaborate about the school selection process.

Score: 645 GMAT Focus
GPA: 6.52/7
Pre-MBA industry: Law
Post-MBA industry: Venture Capital
Hi, I took my GMAT FE on May 27, 2024 and scored a 645 (89th percentile).

I need to understand how I gauge against my peers with respect to securing an admit from top B schools.

Background:

I’m a law graduate from National Law University, Delhi, a premier law school in India. I have a consistent academic record - scored 96.8% in 10th, 93% in 12th, and 6.52 out of 7.0 in graduation (amongst top 15% of my class). I had also secured an all India rank of 2 in the All India Law Entrance Test in 2017.

Work experience:

I have 22 months of work experience at a tier one law firm in India. I have primarily worked here as a financing lawyer and capital markets lawyer. My job involves dealing with some of the biggest companies globally, engaging in multi jurisdiction negotiations and discussions, and frequently engaging with the biggest PE/VC investors and financial institutions globally.

Prior to joining my present role at the law firm immediately after my graduation, I worked for 8 months as a full time consultant (legal and risk) at a legal-tech start-up in India, where I also led the legal team and product structuring team.

I also started my own fin-tech venture last year along with my co-founders, which had commenced operations. However, we had to take an exit from the venture due to change in regulatory regime in India.

Nationality and gender: Indian male

Extra curriculars:

1. I was the convenor of the mess committee at my law school. The mess was a student cooperative structure, which implies an entirely student run operation of the mess. The mess committee oversaw the staffing, procurement of raw materials, fee structure for the mess and collections, supplier negotiations, and financials of the mess. I had an opportunity to lead my team in all these functions.

2. I was engaged as a teaching volunteer at Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access (IDIA), which provides access to legal education to underprivileged students. I had the opportunity to teach a student with total visual impairment, and fortunately, the said student secured admission the following year at the same law school as us.

3. I have recently taken up to running. I have run half marathons. I have also played competitive cricket for some time.

Post MBA goals:

I’m passionate about start-ups and would like to join a venture capital firm post my MBA, to learn more closely about how VC funding works globally and stay abreast and gather nuanced insights from major start up companies globally.

MBA college preference:

While I would prefer to work in India post my MBA, I’m not married to that idea. I’m open to exploring other relevant opportunities.

My college preference for MBA is primarily dependent upon the course being relatively shorter and full-time.

While I’m hoping to get into ISB, NUS or a tier one European B-school, I need some help with my short listing colleges which fall in place with my career objectives at the moment, as I’m having difficulty in streamlining the application process.

I also understand that my GMAT score is average, so that becomes a consideration while short listing relevant colleges. So, I’m also a little apprehensive about my chances at top B schools.

Hi @kabira0910,
Thanks for sharing your profile and MBA aspirations. My name is Priyanka, Client Manager at ARINGO.

Strengths of your profile for MBA application:
• Strong academic record
• Work experience: 22 months at a top law firm, handling complex projects and dealing with major companies and investors, showcasing valuable legal and business experience. Leading a legal team at a startup further demonstrates leadership potential. However, your overall experience is on the lower side than the class average of your target schools.
• Entrepreneurial experience: Starting your own Fin-tech venture, even though it exited due to regulations, shows initiative and interest in the business world.
• Leadership experience: Leading the mess committee at your law school demonstrates organizational and financial management skills.
• Volunteer experience: Teaching underprivileged students demonstrates social responsibility and commitment to education.
• Clear post-MBA goals: You have a well-defined goal of transitioning into venture capital after your MBA.

Areas for Improvement:
• GMAT FE score: While a 645 is a decent score, some top programs might prefer even higher scores. Consider retaking the GMAT if you feel you can improve significantly.
• Focus on your strengths and quantify your achievements: Highlight your legal expertise, business acumen from your work experience, and entrepreneurial drive in your application essays. As mentioned, since the experience is on the lower side, use numbers and data to showcase the impact of your work at the law firm and with your startup

Schools: While your target school list is great considering your goals, you will have a better chance in them with an improved GMAT score. Other schools that you can consider:
• IE Business School (Spain): Known for its entrepreneurship focus and alumni network in VC.
• ESSEC Business School (France): Strong program with a Venture Capital specialization.
• HEC Paris: Top European program with a strong alumni network in finance and VC.

Overall, your profile is strong with a clear career path and relevant experience. By strategically targeting schools, highlighting your strengths, and potentially improving your GMAT score, you can increase your chances of admission to a top MBA program. If you send me your CV and other info on priyankak@ARINGO.com , I would love to connect you with our CEO who will be happy to help further with a detailed review and perhaps work together on some amazing apps.

Hi. Very nice profile. I think you are targeting schools well - European and Indian programs would value your profile the most!
They would also appreciate your gov work and background better. The only side that you may want to address is Why Tech and why will you be successful? Perhaps leveraging some of your deployment/gov experience work and how you can bring that experience to life after MBA. I would also suggest Judge for tech and Oxford.

P.S. LBS is a 2-year and pretty expensive program so while you get a benefit of the Internship in the summer (it is very helpful if you are switching industries), if you have some Tech background that would be attractive to recruiters, I would instead perhaps shoot for a 1-year program.

Thank you for the detailed feedback @bb.
I would definitely consider programs oxford and judge. I may have to consider post MBA goals a little more in detail before filling the applications.
Due to some personal limitations in moving abroad l, I am more inclined towards Indian B-schools. Is there a way to get an intial profile review by a consultant dealing with Indian B-school applications ?

From what I know, CPG firms in the USA rarely hire international MBA's, and Foster (with a class size of 110'ish) barely places 5% of the cohort in that industry. You may want to do your due diligence on such points, as this will impact the outcome of your applications. My observations are specific for the USA.

Even though nothing is impossible, for an Indian, male, with a 665 (i.e. 710-720 classic), and 7 years of WE today (8+ by Sep'25 MBA start) who wants to switch from Tech to Finance through the MBA, I'd say the odds are low for most of the listed schools and a switch to IB / PE could be very challenging. Your high GPA and 5-year international experience in Norway will help - what we cannot forecast is, 'by how much?' Your candidature would have taken a strong and positive turn if you had Norwegian nationality (just my honest view).

So what can you do?
- improve your GMAT score to a level that is ~30 points higher than the average of the schools you finally aim for
- revisit some of the shortlisted schools to identify which ones are strong in Finance and Indian-friendly
- dig deep into your rich past to find stories that will make an impact for your applications
- think: why will a hiring company hire you? it can't be the MBA degree alone

That's a very long and (seemingly) random list of schools that you have listed. As BB said, you have a strong profile: non-engineer, Indian female with a decent GRE (don't know about GPA and it can matter), and off-the-mill ECAs. What you do need to exercise care on is to understand how your past, MBA education, and future career will align, why you need an MBA (other than for elevating your level in the A&PR industry), what due diligence do you need to do in order to be seen as employable and visa sponsor'able, (if that is even a word).

If the employment gap is current and expected to continue, then it could be challenging. It is not just the schools who will see it; even future employers will. However, since your life (and responsibilities) cannot come to a stop just because an MBA aspiration, it just means that a lot will have depend on how you position & package all this.

Think of the core value adding functions in A&PR industry quant / qual research, creative, etc. You should showcase your skills relevant to the MBA class and how are they portable to say, a new geography. Account Management (in my perhaps flawed understanding) is like a jack of many. What are you a master of (if any), what do you lack, why do you need it, etc. etc. are important questions to answer.

Hope something here is of help.

I feel you have a solid profile that has very deep and diverse stories behind it. I feel like it would be easy to put a strong application together. It may be even a challenge to shortlist to focus on among all your accomplishments. The more you can talk about facing clients and interfacing projects, the better.

I think the biggest consideration would be your career goals. Brand management and CPG are very tough for internationals in the US. They also don’t pay as well as other jobs such as consulting and tech product management and finance and almost anything else. However, the right jobs in marketing and advertising and if that’s what your passion is, you can be really good at it.

PS. Comment much on the Indian schools but I feel you should have a solid shot in the US. Your background is unique enough since you’re not a technical engineer 😂

Hey, thanks for the detailed review! Can you please let me know how will the gap impact my application?
User avatar
06 Feb 2024, 15:26
The gap should not be an issue but the question is when was it. If it was a few years ago and you have a job since and it’s a good solid job, you can cover it in your optional essay with a few statements. I think things absolutely come up and it’s good to be in a position where you can take off work and Feel confident and comfortable enough to be able to find a job.

Things such as promotions, raises and awards in the job that you left also help alleviate any questions or concerns about it being a performance or disciplinary issue.
