Choosing Between Purdue mBT and Babson MBA - Need Advice

Hi everyone,

I'm from Taiwan and have over five years of work experience in my home country. My background includes a degree in Fashion Design, roles as a Marketing Specialist at Taiwan's largest department store, and work with an Apple Premium Reseller (APR). Additionally, I've run a small business selling second-hand luxury items online on Shopee.

Despite my diverse experiences, my business knowledge is self-taught, which was a challenge when I noticed a lack of strategic direction at the APR startup where I worked. This experience inspired me to pursue formal business education so I can implement structured, strategic approaches rather than relying on intuition.

My career goal: To establish a second-hand fashion brand that combines online and physical stores. I prefer working behind the scenes, as direct customer interaction, especially with rude customers, is not my preference.

Here are my options:

Purdue University’s Master of Business and Technology (MBT):

Duration: 1 year
Scholarship: $9,000
Pros: Cost-effective, brand new program launching this year.
Cons: New program without a track record.
Babson College Full-Time MBA:

Duration: 2 years
Scholarship: $30,000
Pros: Located in Boston, which is a vibrant, entrepreneurial city with diverse course offerings.
Cons: Uncertain recognition in Asia, which is where I plan to ultimately return.
As someone who has never studied or lived abroad, I'm seeking advice on which program might better suit my goals, especially considering my eventual return to Asia.

Thank you in advance for your insights!

Strong GPA, weak GMAT—specifically for certain schools amongst the 19 you have selected here. You seem to be in consulting industry (tech function) and want to go back to consulting (I presume non-tech function). Doable, so long as you demonstrate the three skills a management consultant needs, your motivation for an MBA, why management consulting in healthcare, how this aligns with your long-term plans, and your fit with the schools.,
The rest (and possible more important) is how you package and present your candidature.

My suggestion would be to target Healthcare schools - Fuqua, UNC, and a few others, that blend consulting and healthcare. Latest recruiting numbers are here (scroll down to the yellow charts)
https://gmatclub.com/forum/best-mba-pro ... 21312.html

A lot of your success will depend on how you rank/compare to peers. Have you had promotions, did you do more than just your job?
Your score will be helpful but it won't be the big driving force in getting you admitted. A score is a dress-code so-speak, if you have a good one, you pass, but you will be judged by by substance.

Hi, I am an Indian IT engineer having 26 months of experience. My 10th/12th/UG scores and work ex are:

UG: 6.37/10 (2015-19)
12th 80.8%
10th: 9.8/10

CDAC: 6 months (Jan 23-July 23)
cloudyBoss (Australian tech-startup): 3 months contract (Jan 22-April 22)
Wipro: 18 months (Oct 19- April 21)

Note: 1. I have several months of gap period while I transitioned to another job. I utilized the gap-period time in job search and improving physical fitness.

Extra-Curriculars:

In school, I was an NCC Cadet in Indian Army for two years and was awarded NCC B certificate. Also represented my school at a quiz competition and got 2nd rank and certificate of recognition.

In college, I participated in various tech and non tech-competitions won medals and certificates of recognition three times. Besides these, I was also associated with an Voluntary Youth Forum and represented my college there. During holidays and summers, I visited many places in different states and actively participated in several programs organized by the forum, served as a volunteer in Youth-fests organized by the forum. Also received certificate of recognition from them. (The youth forum helped thousands of students in fighting depression, suicidal tendencies, intoxicant addictions and imparted Ancient Vedic knowledge helping them in becoming better individuals.)

Also, I am a good at running and can run for 4-5km non-stop. I am also good at e-sports and currently at town hall level 13 at Clash of Clans.

Post-MBA:
I am good at quant so, I am looking forward for a career in Finance especially, Investment Banking and my second option would be consulting; considering my previous involvement with the youth forum.

I would be preparing well and targeting a GMAT score of 750+.

Please review my profile and give your valuable suggestions, comments. Also, suggest schools more suited to my post MBA aspirations. I will be highly thankful to you for giving me few minutes of yours.

I would recommend more experience - it helps as an international to be more seasoned and mature when you recruit and culturally don't quite yet fit in. Promotions would be nice. Having strong undergrad is also nice but can't change that.

If you have managed people that would be a big positive as well as your international experience.
If you can, I would start dabbling in finance - investing, building, maybe even have a startup idea of some sorts to demonstrate your commitment to the field and gaining some relevant experience that you can talk about in the interviews.

Thank you so much bb for your feedback. Yes, I have less experience therefore, I am relying on high GMAT score, volunteering and extra-curriculars, International experience and recent certifications/study of finance for my selection. I don't want to delay doing MBA, as this wouldn't be a good decision from financial perspective.
I haven't managed people as such, my work was more of teamwork and co-operation.
I will be dedicating this time period in studying/doing certifications in finance. I want this to be the strongest factor in my profile. Thank you again for your suggestions.

A high gmat score will not offset the low work experience. Also do not forget that as you come out of the MBA and go into employment, the recruiters will also be looking at your pre-MBA experience. Your peers will have better WE credentials than you and the high gmat score as a potential differentiator would be less attractive to employers.

GMAT may help make your more attractive candidate among lower ranked schools. However, there’s no lack of high scores at the top 10. Just setting your expectations… sorry.

a high score can help you get admission but it will not help you get recruited. Imagine that you and all of your classmates and all the other top 10 graduates are applying for the same jobs. Why wouldn’t employer pick you instead of the all the other applicants who have more experience and therefore more proven track record?

Something that can help in these cases is your background such as if you’re going into product management and so having software background is very helpful but if you’re switching industries, It’s tougher. Strong brands can help. I’m not super familiar with the companies were listed at least one sounds familiar. Getting a brand-name such as Amazon or Microsoft or Google or Accenture will help out with recruiting, and applications.

Thanks dee and bb. I agree that people with more experience are more 'reliable', 'consistent and 'credible'. In India, the situation is different; many top b-schools (IIMs) have avg work ex of 2.5-3 years. I have seen people with 1 year experience getting in top b-schools, here.

For people who want to transition to different field say from IT to finance; in this case I don't think that the IT guy with 4 years of work ex has extra edge over me as both of us are at same page when it comes to knowledge and experience in finance. (Someone on reddit was saying that while hiring, financial firms are looking for the STEM degree+ MBA combo. Link: https://www.reddit.com/r/FinancialCaree ... are_button)

For me getting into MIT, Harvard is much more easier than getting big brands on my resume; lol. My domain is cyber security and these brands need 5-6 years of research experience with published papers; before inviting me for the interview.

Yes of course. It requires long time of dedication (years!) and great effort to reach to that level. Any seasoned CoC player will know what it means to be at Town Hall level 13.

Providing an alternative perspective from someone who has not played the game, I would guess most of the admissions directors not be familiar with this achievement so you want to somehow quantified so it’s understandable to an average person on the street. For example, you would have to figure out how many people play the game and how many of them have reached this level and you could say I am in the top 0.001% of all players.

at the same time, you don’t want to communicate that you have basically wasted all your time instead of volunteering, pursuing meaningful relationships, getting promotions at work and so and so forth you just played games. You want to demonstrate some kind of a quality. Maybe it’s skill or perseverance and also why is this important to you? Is this something you do because you’re bored well that’s pretty useless. Is this something you try to inspire or help others or is this something you do for other more exciting reasons.

Don’t get me wrong, any achievement is fantastic but you can get a lot more out of some of them than others as an example, you could say I watch four hours of TV per day and that’s kind of a negative but if you said I watched every single episode of This particular TV show and I can quote it and I have participated in trivia and I dressed up as a character for Halloween and I know everything about the director, then put a different tone to it and personality rather than I waste my life watching TV .

Great points, bb. In my succinct way, all I will say is, "Don't fall in love with your own CV or profile. The fall from the pedestal can be very hard." It is a buyer's market, and the candidate is a seller. Period.

Thanks bb for your comment. May be this will sound more right: I am at level 13 after 2 more levels, at level 16, I will become eligible to compete globally for world championship in Clash of Clans.

My main motivation for playing this game comes from the fact that this game gives me a new dimension to think, to devise different approaches and strategies for winning battles, to appreciate ingenious mind who have developed this game. I generally play when I have free time; nothing more than that, but playing it consistently.

Thanks dee. I have already accepted your best wishes. Now, I don't have to worry about anything.😂🤣😂🤣

I have spent around 4 years working at Bain Capability Network, having graduated from Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Delhi University in 2020. Post MBA, I’m looking to work at a consulting firm in the short term, and eventually would like to start my own venture in the sustainability space.

At Bain Capability Network, I have worked with international stakeholders (US, Europe, SE Asia) and currently report to a senior stakeholder based in America. Additionally, I have actively participated in extracurricular activities at work and during my undergrad years, holding multiple positions of responsibility.

INSEAD is my dream college, both for the geography as well as the mission and values of the school. I am open to applying for the Jan 2026 /Aug 2025 intake (though I would prefer January for the internships). I understand that lack of international exposure might be a hindrance. Kindly evaluate my profile and let me know where I stand!

Hi Tavishi , INSEAD alumna here (and former admissions interviewer). Your score is fantastic, and I can see how it might help you since you have been in a research focused role in BCN and come from an overrepresented pool (from within the consulting pool at INSEAD). I would say you should give your best at LBS and INSEAD and apply to a few of the M7s as well. For the post MBA goals, try to add more depth than just saying you want to get into a front end MBB role. There are certain nuances to how MBBs recruit. A larger vision would read better on the application.

Best wishes

If the 2026 Fall admission is your target, then it's fine, as 2025 intake would be early for you from a work experience point of view. Your GPA appears weak if it is on a 10 point scale, but not so if it is on a 7-point scale. That said, as an Indian male, you will still need a stupendous score if HBS is a serious selection for you. BTW, your school select may need a revisit (UK, US, France, Italy). I hope you are not shooting off the hip and have done your due diligence in terms of post MBA visa norms, language requirements, etc.

Fantastic profile, Harshit. However, I would suggest retaking the GMAT. For ISB, the pool that applies with a high probability of conversion is a small subset of the universal database that the GMAC has used to share the conversion data most people refer to these days. What I am trying to say is that ISB will look at stats and will always find someone better to award the last seat to.

Additionally, I don't think you will be eligible to apply to IIM A PGPX this year because the threshold is set to four years of experience. Even if you do, you will be at the lower extreme spectrum of the applicant pool. Increasing your GMAT score can give you the push you need at this point.

Having said that, I feel you have been strategic with your career pivots, which will be a great talking point in your essays and during your interviews. Going deeper into the specifics of how you added value to these feeder brands that were your clients, and how that makes you a good fit for roles at these companies, is a fail-proof strategy for securing admits. Feel free to discuss specifics should you want professional guidance.

Best wishes

Hi. it looks like you have applied already and I’m happy to share some thoughts but not sure how much you can leverage of it.

If you are indeed over represented, your test score is right on par with the schools average but likely 30 points below your peer average.

Going from software to consulting will be scrutinized as it is a meaningful shift. The admissions team will be evaluating your interview and your communication skills which tend to be critical for consultants. Will you be able to impress a consulting firm during an interview?

Areas that can strengthen your application on the other hand, would be having a strong brand name. Recruiters go through stacks of resumes and having a strong brand we at least get you selected for a second review or an interview.

Since you have submitted your application, I would strongly recommend perfecting and polishing your presentation and interview skills. Make sure you come off confident on video and you speak very clearly and engaging.

That’s all I got 😂

😂👍 that’s a great result to get admitted from HEC so that could inspire you to greater heights. US is very competitive but also very big with many schools. Most top 20 are solid.

Hello, I hope your interview with Kellogg went smoothly. I'm unsure about the status of my application as I haven't received any updates from Kellogg regarding the interview. Should I assume that my application has been rejected by now?
User avatar

Hey Prateek, considering that Kellogg invites all its candidates to interview within the first 6 weeks, I am sorry to say it is safe to assume that your application might have been looked over if you haven't received the update by now

Hey, congrats on the Booth offer! I am curious about when you interviewed with Stern, and how they informed you were waitlisted after the interview (email/portal/call) ? And the decision was made on 3/30? I am waiting for a final decision after the Stern interview too so I am super nervous. Thanks in advance!

I have worked as a Salesforce developer in a Big Four Firm for 4 year in ERI and Health Care and Life sciences based project. All the projects I have worked on are large scale projects and have been published on various journals. I don't have managerial experience as I am a technical architect but I do have 3 team members reporting to me. I have been a part of few clubs during my undergrad but it is based on social impact. At work, I have volunteered for conducting procreational games and been part of Women Summit. I have also been part of core team for conducting events at office level. In my 3.5 years, I have received 5 awards. My short term goal is slide into a product managerial role and my long term goal is to continue working at consulting in a leadership position.
My primary target is US and I'll be applying to a few schools in Asia and Europe. I am Engineering Graduate specialized in Electronics and communication Engineering from a tier 1 college in India (Not IITs/NITs but a private deemed university)

You are well placed to create a strong and compelling candidature, provided you secure a good GMAT score. The rest will entirely depend on your narratives in the applications and showcasing of your achievements, etc. Use this time to research schools in depth. However, without a confirmed score, you could be a rudderless boat, not knowing which schools you could finally apply to.

I am currently working as a technology consultant at a big4 firm for 3+ years (4+ years or experience by the time sessions start). I have worked on multiple large scale transformation projects that involves a variety of groups. I have a bit of leadership experience from these projects. I have experience as a startup founder as well have good extracurriculars. I am looking to move into the TPM roles or moving into management consulting. My long term goal is to start my own company in the technology and marketing sector.
My primary target is US and I'll be applying to a few schools in Asia and Europe.

Strong GPA. Well done. A very strong GMAT will put on a strong wicket. The rest is all about positioning, packaging, and selling your candidature to the buyer based on what you bring, what they seek, and how you fit. For this, deep research on schools will be crucial.

Business Schools in general receive high volume of applications from Big 4 - so in your case the critical factor will be focusing on your applications and test score. The shortlist of schools is very broad and applying to so many schools is not a wise decision both in terms of time and efforts, and in terms of creating a unique application. Would recommend have a relook at the list of schools once you have a GRE/GMAT score with an emphasis on programs that have a focus on Technology.
US tends to be the best for Technology careers, so that destination would be recommended over EU and Asia.

All the best!

Thank you,

I am looking to advance my career and leadership skills with MBA and hopefully continue my career in project management in leading international biotech industry in Denmark. Sorry, we’ve been tidying up and finalizing the list of programs so we haven’t added the Copenhagen business school to the list.

if you’re planning to work in Denmark, it makes sense to apply there as well, as they may offer a very attractive tuition.

LBS is extremely expensive. That would be one Jing against it unless you can make a significant difference because certain employers only higher there for example but if the employer is agnostic, often they may overlook lower rank exchange for a candidate who has a stronger résumé and comes with the referral.

PS it is a strength that you’re planning to stay within the same industry and not switching, this will allow you to leverage your prior work experience. Ideally you would have a well recognized brand on your résumé. 😬

That means you will have 3 years of work experience at the time of matriculation - that's OK but not the perfect 5 years. As long as you have had a stand-out career with some achievements, promotions, and other elements that highlight you as a bright shooting start (can't pick that out of a 1-liner), I think it is safe to apply with just 3 years. Otherwise, would recommend trying to expand your profile as much as possible with any opportunity you can (e.g. international assignments, increased responsibility, facing customers or execs, etc) - these all add up!
