aid in or aid to? [#permalink] New post 18 Nov 2008, 23:29
106. Among the objects found in the excavated temple were small terra-cotta effigies left by supplicants who were either asking the goddess Bona Dea’s aid in healing physical and mental ills or thanking her for such help.
(A) in healing physical and mental ills or thanking her for such help
(B) in healing physical and mental ills and to thank her for helping
(C) in healing physical and mental ills, and thanking her for helping
(D) to heal physical and mental ills or to thank her for such help
(E) to heal physical and mental ills or thanking her for such help

I am confused between A AND D.. Insight please...

D cannot be correct as it breaks the parallelism "either asking.....or thanking".
A should be the answer.

A.
either needs "or".
D and E are out since "aid to" is incorrect.
"aid in " is correct idiom.

P 812 OG12 :
.... Moreover, the government is proposing to cut funds for aid to education in the near
future.”

AID to Education == Aid to VERB == Correct

But in Manhattan SC P143 :
Her AID TO WALK the dog was appreciated. == Wrong

anyone can help me?

I think the way the idiom works is as follows:

aid IN (doing something) . . . "Her aid IN WALKING the dog"

(give) aid TO (someone or something) . . . "cut aid TO EDUCATION"

Old thread, but here's the difference:

"Aid to" describes who is getting the aid.
"Aid in" describes what kind of aid is being given.

He provided aid to the homeless.
His aid in serving food to the homeless was appreciated.
