A new cell phone plan is offering pricing based on average monthly use. Brandon and Jodie are comparing their average use to determine the best plan for them. Brandon's average monthly usage in 2001 was q minutes. Was this less than, greater than, or equal to Jodie's 2001 average monthly usage, in minutes?

(1) From January to August 2001, Jodie's average monthly usage was 1.5q minutes.
(2) From April to December 2001, Jodie's average monthly usage was 1.5q minutes.

Guys - badly struggled on this one. I have gone for E, but its a guess. Can someone please let me know how to solve this?

I think it is B. here is how I arrived at it
From question we know:
Brad avg is q. So for 12 months his total is 12q.
we have to find if Jodie uses more or less than 12q in the same year which will make her avg. greater or less than Brad

(1) For 8 months avg. is 1.5q so total for 8 months = 1.5q x 8 = 12q. Now for remaining months Jodie can use zero minutes or some minutes so her total usage for the year will be = 12q or > than 12q. INSUFFICIENT.

(2) For 9 months avg. is 1.5q so total for 9 months = 1.5q x 9 = 13.5q which is > than 12q. SUFFICIENT.

Thanks Paragpha. But I think statement 2 will be insufficient as well as we don't know what was the usage for the rest of the 3 months. So for me the answer should be E.

Guys any thoughts please?

But for (2) we know that usage is 13.5q and the usage cannot go negative as number of minutes used for cell phone plan for remaining 3 months cannot go negative. (hidden constraint) so since 13.5q is > 12q in my opinion it is sufficient.
what say?
