Hi all,

IF the question reads: Leo can buy a certain computer for p1 dollars in State A, where the sales tax is t1 percent, or he can buy the same computer for p2 dollars in State B, where the sales tax is t2 percent. Is the total cost of the computer greater in State A than in State B?

Does it mean that the base prices are p1 & p2 and tax would be added on top of them? OR does it mean that p1 and p2 are the TOTAL costs inclusive of respective taxes??

I stongly believe it is the former case just that on the forum ( http://www.beatthegmat.com/variables-t12927.html) few people have deduced the answer considering the latter one as their base. Can anyone of you please confirm??

Thank you so much!!!

The question states that "Leo can buy a computer for x dollars" would refer to x as the base price in this case. I just came across the MGMAT forum as well where they have used x as the base price over which the sales tax is calculated.

The "Is the total cost of the computer greater in State A than in state B" gives away the fact that its the base price. Else the question would be simply stating if p1>p2. In such a scenario, the conditions will be insufficient, and the above assumption would introduce 2 more variables for the base price.

Admins, Please correct me if I am wrong

Regards,
Arpan
