let me try......first of all there is a mistake in option (C). it is "reached" and not "reach"

The first detailed study of magpie attacks in Australia indicates that by the time they had reached adulthood, 98 percent of men and 75 percent of women born in country have been attacked by the birds.

a) by the time they had reached adulthood, 98 percent of men and 75 percent of women born in country have been attacked by the birds
b) by the time they reach adulthood, 98 percent of men and 75 percent of women, who were born in the country, had been attacked by birds.
c) by the time they reached adulthood, 98 percent of men and 75 percent of the women born in the country had been attacked by the birds.
d) 98 percent of the men and 75 percent of the women that were born in the country were attacked by the birds by the time they reach adulthood.
e) 98 percent of men and 75 percent of women who were born in the country, by the time they reached adulthood had been attacked by birds

Please explain the difference between "D" and "E"

in E......

(1) there is a single comma which is making the sentence very awkward...."98 percent of men and 75 percent of women who were born in the country" should have been between two commas.
(2) "who" incorrectly refers to percentage of men and women....rather it should be "pecentage of All people 'who' were or 'that' were born in the country"

in D....the above point (2) will apply

and then between "A", "B" and "C"

we need past tense with past perfect tense

also we need present tense with present perfect tense

we cannot mix and match both

in A....

"reached" (past) + "have been" (present perfect ) is incorrect.....

in B...

"reach" (present) + "had been" (past perfect) is incorrect

in C....

"reached" (past) + "had been" (past perfect) is correct.

This is an example of a past perfect verb usage, both events occurred in the past.
We need to identify which even occurred earlier,

In this case clearly the people were attacked by birds before they reached adulthood, hence we use - had been.

I think the answer is E because the pronoun "they" refers clearly to men and women only in E. The reference of "they" is ambiguous in all other options.

Where is the source? Is there really a typo in C? If so, C should be correct as it is the only option with correct usage of past perfect tence.

There is a typo in the question. It's "reached" in option C instead of "reach".
There are few more issues. Plz confirm the given options...!!

a) by the time they had reached adulthood, 98 percent of men and 75 percent of women born in country have been attacked by the birds
b) by the time they reach adulthood, 98 percent of men and 75 percent of women, who were born in the country, had been attacked by birds.
c) by the time they reached adulthood, 98 percent of men and 75 percent of the women born in the country had been attacked by the birds.
d) 98 percent of the men and 75 percent of the women that were born in the country were attacked by the birds by the time they reach adulthood.
e) 98 percent of men and 75 percent of women who were born in the country, by the time they reached adulthood had been attacked by birds

Answer should be C. Past perfect tense goes only with past tense which is there in C. A is using both past and present perfect tense which makes no sense, B is having present + past perfect, wrong again, in D that refers to only 75% of women and not men so changes the meaning from original and same is case for WHO in E. answer is C.

Guys, please be careful when you post questions. Type them properly. I spent a lot of time on this one and couldn't choose any answer, just to see later that the option C (which I previously ruled out as A and B because it's written in simple present) had a mistake, instead of "reach" should be "reached".

C here.

Who and that modify the noun just before them.Hence women are modified in those sentences.

C removes these errors totally.

Hi

I think the answer should be E as the antecedent to the pronoun they can be clearly identified.

With people going with C , can you please explain how does the answer satisfy the pronoun antecedent rule.

Many Thanks

Apart from the verb tense, I have two more doubts, please help me with them if you can.

1. In option C, it's stated that "98 percent of men and 75 percent of the women", are these two parallel. I think we can have "98 percent of men and 75 percent of women" as parallel, or "98 percent of the men and 75 percent of the women" as parallel. Am I right or missing something?

2. In option B it's stated "by the birds" whereas in option C it's "by birds". In the question sentence it's clear that birds are referring to magpies, so I think "the birds" is more correct, as "by birds" may mean any bird in the world.

Though these two doubts may not be the deciding factor in choosing the right option, I often get confused by the article "the". Pl. explain!

Question (typed correctly)

a.) by the time they had reached adulthood, 98 percent of men and 75 percent of women born in the country have been attacked by the birds.
b.) by the time they reach adulthood, 98 percent of men and 75 percent of women, who were born in the country, had been attacked by the birds.
c.) by the time they reached adulthood, 98 percent of men and 75 percent of women born in the country had been attacked by the birds.
d.) 98 percent of men and 75 percent of women that were born in the country were attacked by the birds by the time they reach adulthood.
e.) 98 percent of men and 75 percent of women who were born in the country, by the time they reached adulthood had been attacked by the birds.

A): Verb tense. "had reached" is the past perfect and should only be the past tense. "have been" is present perfect and suggests that the attacks are continuing into the present
B): Verb tense and awkward. "reach" should be "reached". Also the "who" clause makes it awkward.
C): Correct. I agree that "they" could be ambiguous, but it's has the least amount of error
D): Verb tense. "were attacked" should be the past perfect "had been attacked"
E): ", by the time they reached adulthood had been attacked by the birds" is awkward and ambiguous because of the comma. It makes the sentence incomplete. It would be ok if there was a comma after adulthood: ", by the time they reached adulthood,"

Therefore the correct answer is C
