Paul, would you mind explaining to us why "E" is incorrect?

E says severance packages require workers to stay until the last day that they (workers) are scheduled to collect....

Sentence in quotes means "worker are scheduled to collect", which is wrong. It is Package, which is scheduled to collect.

I think in choice E 'they' cannot be referred to 'workers' because it doesn't make sense.

Whenever pronoun has a clear referent, there is no ambiguity. I've remembered we discussed with banerjeea about this.

E) the last day that they are scheduled to collect, the automobile companys severance package is available to workers.

And look at the red part, I think the pronoun is consistent to refer to 'packages'.

choice D also has pronoun 'their', why doesn't it be ambiguous?

Would any expert keep to elaborate

Interesting discussion. D is definitely the right answer. First in D, as part of the dep. clause, "their" is not ambiguous at all and it refers to "workers". E's problem is as MA pointed out and it is because it is passive. The active voice would be what D is. The issue b/w D and E is definitely one of conciseness. I'll give you two examples:

The house that lies across the hill is blue
The house across the hill is blue

Notice how the first sentence could be simplified to the second one without altering the understanding of it. By introducing a "that", restrictive clause, the setence is lengthened and it is crucial that you take the most concise answer in GMAT world.

E) the last day that they are scheduled to collect, the automobile companys severance package is available to workers

Ok After all this discussiona and brain stroming I have figured a subtle difference ..as hinted by Paul. Thanks Paul I knew you wil come to rescue.

My Thoughts are as follows:

let's look at E first:

E) the last day that they(WROKERS) are scheduled to collect( ellipsis PACKAGES), the automobile companys severance package is available to workers

Don't you guys think that "THEY ARE" here is unnecessary as even if we stike out "THEY ARE" and read the sentence it will read perfectly fine lets c that

Unlike most severance packages, which require workers to stay until the last day that they are scheduled to collect, the automobile companys severance package is available to workers.

I hope you guys don'e see yellow.
Don't you guys think it reads much better.

I HTH

Agree with your analysis saurab. I forgot to add that D and E have typos in that it should read "company's" instead of "companys"

D. Any reason why this pulled from the recent archives? When in doubt Kaplan suggests to choose the shortest answer.

One of nice discussions has taken place at below link:
http://www.manhattangmat.com/forums/unl ... t2001.html

But, I think a better version of D without change would have been:
D) their last scheduled day [strike]in order[/strike]to collect, the automobile company's severance package is available to workers.

Let me know if any of rules are broken with this....
