640 VS solid international work experience [#permalink]

Hi,

I've asked same question on the accepted.com:

I have a question about my chances to be accepted.

I took a GMAT couple of days ago and got 640(Q45,79%/V33,69%). It was not my first attempt , one year ago I had 600 and 570 consequently. My TOEFL score is 260.

I am Russian female ,29. Working for Japanese-Korean sefood trading company as a marketing manager for 7 years. I am living in South Korea and can speak korean language. I have a bachelor degree in Engineering(Railway) from Russian University with 3,6 GPA ( we do not have a ranking system in Russia).

I am going to apply to HBS,Chikago,MIT,Michigan,LBS,INSEAD.

I know that my GMAT score is modest but given that I have solid international experience should I consider to re-take the test (there is not much time for big improvement since deadlines are approaching , though I feel I could perform better on)? What are my chances if I apply with the current score ?

It sounds like you do have great experience, but ideally you could raise your GMAT score by at least another 20-30 points. My one concern is that it sounds like you already have taken the exam three times (if I read your message right). We recommend that people try to take the GMAT no more than three times, since taking it more often than that can make it look like you didn't prepare very well, and just kept on taking it until you got a good score. Three is an arbitrary limit, but that's a basic rule of thumb.

So, you don't want to just keep taking it until you like your score. If you're confident that you can improve on your score, then consider taking it again. But it sounds as though you don't have a lot of time, and won't be able to do any additional preparation before taking it again. (I assume that you want to apply this year.) Just be aware that if you rush to take it agtain this year and get another score in the low 600's, it can start to hurt your chances overall. In a perfect world, I would recommend that you take some time to really study and prepare before taking it again.
