GMAT Tests User
Hi,

I am thinking in applying to a PhD Program in a top univeristy. I would like to know if it is necessary prior academic experience such as assistant professor or working in a research institution.

I have been the top student in college and in other academic programs, but my experience has been focused mainly in banking and government.

Please your comments.
Thanks!

No, prior work experience in academia is not necessary to apply to PhD programs. If you're interested in getting into the top programs what is required is a very good academic record (which it sounds like you have), and an excellent GMAT score. For the top programs I would imagine that you'd want to score in at least the 95th percentile on the GMAT if not higher. Work experience in your field of interest helps, although all programs will say that it's not absolutely necessary. A masters degree will help, although not absolutely necessary.
