Hello Paul,

Need your valuable feedback.

My Profile:

31 Yr Indian Male
Education: Masters of Engineering in Electronics from reputed college in India – Class Topper with 73%marks
State Scholarship Holder (Based on Merit only) from grade 5th to 12th
State Scholarship Holder (Based on merit only) in two semester of B.E.

GMAT – 2nd Attempt - 700 (Q50 V33), first attepmt - 650

I am from a rural and agricultural background and me and my parents struggled a lot to get to this point where we are standing now. My mother is first educated lady in my whole family tree. My brother is the first doctor in our whole village and I am the first engineer in my whole family tree.

Work Ex –
Working in top Indian IT Company for last 5 years 3 months (as of today). In US for past 3 years. Last 2 years as a project manager, managing a team of 3 to 10 people. Handled projects in international banking, mortgage and manufacturing sectors.

Goals:
In short term I would like to gain some business experience and then I plan to start my own business in India. As I have seen that lot of startups come up everyday. If there is one successful venture, there are 10 unsuccessful ones at the same time. I believe that these failures are due to lack of business knowledge. An MBA can fill that gap for me. As I mentioned earlier, because of my agri background, my plan is to get into food processing industry. For this purpose we (me and my brother) have procured some land in India and started growing our own products. In future we plan to grow by setting up food processing plant to tap the market created by busy working middle class, which is growing day by day, in India.

Community Service and Extra Curricular:
All my community service is because of the problems I saw in my surroundings or I faced myself. My brother is a doctor so we used to talk a lot about the conditions of people in rural areas and problems faced by hospitals. So I did following:

1. Organized 3-4 blood donation camps. Each camp fetched more than 250 units of blood. All under the umbrella of Red Cross in conjunction with a state level organization in India. I myself also donated blood around 8-9 times.
2. Three of my first relatives had cataract operations and then I came to know how many more people are suffering from this disease. Funding the efforts partly ourselves and partly by sponsorship, I and my brother organized 3-4 free cataract operation camps in most affected rural areas in our state.
3. As you know there is little or no govt support in India in cases when the disaster has not hit a large area. Thats why I led many teams (Supplying foods, medicines, rescuing people etc) during local disasters such as flood, drought, and bombs blasts in our state.
4. From my own experiences, I know how much role guidance plays in your success, so I am mentoring the needy and capable students in rural areas. I asked my father to identify such students and to let me know. Then I do tele-mentoring sessions once or twice a month and also help students financially.
5. Volunteered a lot in the ER because of shortage of staff in the hospital where my brother was doing his MD.
5. Was captian of college soccer team for two years during my graduation and led the team in inter-college competitions.

Interested in following: (I am more interested in 1 year programs)

1. Wharton – Dream School
2. MIT – Dream School
3. INSEAD
4. Oxford
5. Cambridge
6. IMD
7. LBS

Could you please answer following Questions based on my profile?

1. Where I stand if I apply to above mentioned schools?
2. What other schools do you suggest based on my goals?
3. Is my short term goal, to gain some experience in business world, justified for my long term goal?
4. Should I rush my couple of applications for the first rounds? If yes, then which one do you suggest?

Thanks in advance.

Parmender,

Apologies for the delayed response, have been on the road. I don't think your odds are especially good at Wharton, MIT, LBS, or INSEAD based on the info you provided. It's not that there are major red flags (your age might be an issue, however), but that I don't see truly unusual experiences that set you apart from the crowd (which in your demographic is quite strong). It's quite possible (even likely) that there's more to your profile than meets the eye and that if you executed well and used your essays to make yourself stand out, one of these schools could come through for you. Without knowing that for sure, however, I think these schools would be your long shots. I think the odds at Oxford, Cambridge, and IMD are somewhat better, but -- for the reasons stated -- even at these schools your odds are fair in my opinion.

Given your goals, consider USC, Michigan, Texas, Haas, Indiana, UNC, or Chicago.

Your short-term goal is far too vague. Stating that you want to gain some non-entrepreneurial experience to gain the skills to start your own firm is a good idea, but the goal as you stated it must be fleshed out.

I would not "rush" any of your applications. Submit in the first round if you believe your application cannot be significantly improved with further tweaking. The difference in odds of admission between applying first and second round is not sufficient to justify cutting corners in quality.

Good luck,
