Apparently I panic... [#permalink] New post 03 May 2012, 18:55
Hey everyone- So I took the test recently and got a 570, 41 quant 28 verbal after few months of studying. Heres the issue, I had been scoring in the high 600's before and I don't know what happened. 33 was the lowest verbal in prep I ever got and even that was weirdly low. My quant was at a solid mid-upper level 40s. I was at a solid 45 quant and hit 47 and 48 three times in the Cats.

When I'm studying with my tutor, he doesn't know what to tell me. He says your clearly at a high 40's level in quant and I have gotten maybe one RC wrong when we are practicing. He says he has no idea what's going on and I should easily be at a low 700 score right now. He said he would gladly tutor me more but he doesn't know what to do with me since I'm getting everything.

I know its nerves and all the usual stuff but "breathing and being confident" really doesn't help me. I need to figure this out because its really holding me back. If anyone has suggestions that would be great. Thanks.

What material did you use ? More importantly , what were your practice test scores ? Don't go to too much by your practice test score, instead try to focus on what mistakes you made and how you can learn them.

Nervousness will definetly affect your performance , but you have to remind yourself that this is just another exam , don't approach it saying "this exam defines my life" and put additional pressure on yourself. It sound strange but you have to enjoy the gnat experience rather than treating it as a burden on your shoulders

Hi- thanks for response Geroge,

I used mgmat guides, kaplan math workbook, og 10 and 12, a couple veritas workbooks- great problems, and thats about it. It's not a content issue- I really do know the material. What scares me most is that I wasn't in that "this test defines me" mode. If I was, I could may attribute the drop in the score to that but I wasnt. Obviously for the first few questions my heart was pounding out of my chest but I think it slowed down- its hard to remeber, went so fast. Verbal I really wasn't nervous at all... I had in my mind that I was probably going to take it again so what ever happens happens... So imagine if i really was freaking out haha.

My scores for mgmat cat's, 3 were 670, one I think 690 and another 650 If i recall. My gmat prep were both 650 I think. I wasn't expecting a 700 yet I thought I would be fine with a 650 for the first try even though I am going for a 700.
I think I underestimated verbal- especially SC. So that has been my main focus now. I have no trouble at all with CR. There are those random ones that are difficult to understand the sitiuation but theres nothing I can do for those- there rare also. I am hoping to increase my SC accuracy and timing to spend more time making sure im correct about the RC. I just took my first mgmat cat after 2 weeks of studying and got a 700, 47 quant 38 verbal.. broke 700 for the first time- feels awesome!

Don't worry ! Your scores indicate that you can score much higher . Try to learn as much as possible from the mistakes you make . It's better to do 100 questions properly rather than do 1000 questions superficially . Your score will improve , just work hard and be patient .

If you want additional practice for the SC section , try doing the SC grail ( I love this book )
