Hello, all:

First, I’d like to say that this is a really great site with lots of helpful info and people!

My question is regarding an arrest and misdemeanor charge (Public Intoxication) received within the last year. It was a night of bad judgment following a period of rather severe personal (read: parental/familial) stress and I haven’t stopped beating myself up for the experience. However, thankfully, the charge was dismissed without conviction after a brief deferral period with the help of an attorney – I called the court to confirm that there was no final conviction, so I know I need not disclose if asked about “convictions” only.

Regardless, I am wondering if this is something I should bring up in each school’s optional essay – even if asked only about convictions. Should I mention it or leave it out of the discussion unless asked directly?

I wouldn't mention it unless it's specifically asked. Some schools only ask about convictions, some only about felonies, and others ask for it all. Just answer what is asked honestly. Good luck.
