Hi Think ISB,

Please tell me weather it is harmful to repeat stuff in essays, for eg., if i want to write the ans of 'why MBA from ISB?' (which is actually 2nd essay) in my 1st essay also (why i should be admitted...along with other reasons,an MBA from ISB would help me because ----) , would'nt it look boring to see the same thing in 2nd essay? Also, the thing that makes me unique comes in 1st essay .. and most prob. i would want to repeat it in 3rd essay .. should I repeat stuff or find alternate methods?

Dear jhkaas,

We won't say it is harmful. But we would not advise anyone to repeat the same thing in 3 essays. There are only 900 words to describe yourself, to help the admissions committee know the complete you. Why do you want to waste it? It is a good idea to mention different aspects of your personality in different essays and do not repeat the same thing, waste precious words and bore the reader. This will give a signal that you have nothing else to tell.

If you have different aspects of your personality to showcase, show through different examples.

Hope this helps.

Hi ThinkISB,

I have a very basic question for re-applicants. The essay topics published by ISB this year seems little similar to last year topics - Essay1 is similar to last years Essay1 and Essay2 is partially similar to last years Essay3.

In such a case, does repeating some of the information from last years essay be advisable? Or do you think that would leave bad impression on adcom, since I believe the adcom will have access to both the set of essays.

Please advise.

Dear bigoyal,

You can definitely repeat some of your spikes from your last year's application. It would not harm you. After all the adcom would look for consistency. You cannot change all your USPs in one year, can you? A lot of focus should go into the re-applicant essay. Get the feedback from the adcom, try to discern what was the problem in you last year's application and show you have done something to improve upon yourself.

Dear techchin,

Here is a brief profile eval:

Analytical Horsepower: Very strong.

A very good GMAT and a good performance during graduation as well.

Work Experience: Fair

A little more detail can help. But I am sure you will have a clear idea of how you will project your career growth using a job role tree (for more detail, please see: https://www.thinkisb.com/blog/2010/05/15 ... -stronger/). 5 years of international experience is definitely a big plus.

Diversity:Average

@ work: Do highlight it as you have done it for 2 years. So there will be a continuity.
@graduation: State level quiz champ is good but is too old.
Lose the singing competition point.

Overall, you are a very fair candidate and I encourage you to apply.

1) Is ISB a good fit considering my Exp. level?
Ans: This depends on what you want to do post MBA. If you tell me this I can reply to this query much better.

2) What does ISB look for in older applicants?
Ans: Leaving aside the general requirements of how unique you are, the adcom would check whether the applicant is clear about what he wants from the MBA, where he wants to go post MBA and why an MBA now. You MUST have compelling reasons for these questions.

Dear Akshay,

You are correct. You have a very decent profile. Here's a brief eval:
Levels: Very Weak-Weak-Average-Fair-Strong-Very Strong

Analytical Horsepower: Average.
Note: GMAT must be around 700.

Work Ex: Average - Fair
Note: I have limited info here. Although you have lower number of years of experience (because of which it is avg), you have had diverse job responsibilities. Do bring out the biotech research exp with exposure to business aspects. With proper representation of a good growth path this can be converted to fair.

Extra Curriculars: Strong
You need not ask anybody about this. It is very impressive. You have persisted with and achieved a lot in an activity. a definite winner in the extra-curriculars deptt.

I'm sure you will have finer points to highlight other aspects such as leadership and overall diversity.

In sum, you are a 'Fair' candidate and I encourage you to apply.

Regards,

ThinkISB,

Dear Arjun,

Please find a brief profile eval,

Levels: Very Weak-Weak-Average-Fair-Strong-Very Strong

Analytical Horsepower: Fair
Note: GMAT is good. The acads that been fairly consistent throughout.

Work Ex: Average
Note: Not much data here. But one thing- be clear about mentioning your growth profile. A team lead in a services company in 5 years is really good. A break up of your job responsibilities, the additions and timelines is required. One more thing- The significant achievement of yours is not coming out well. Start by saying what has happened because of this. The adcom doesn't want to hear that you built this center. Phrase it as: Resulted in......by starting the......

Extra Curriculars: Weak-Average
It may be either of the two based on what you project. Note that you do not need to substantiate every activity with certificates. The passion for travelling, photography etc are great. They must have given you good perspectives in things in life and you definitely must have used them in your professional life as well. It is time to think on that and make this section come out as a winner.

I'm sure you will have finer points to highlight other aspects such as leadership and overall diversity.

Overall, you are in the 'Average-Fair' zone.

One of the top 10 Technical schools in the country..
Have had the opportunity to work as an intern in Microsoft for three months in Bangalore during my Graduation.

I have a negative point in my profile, that my GPA is not that impressive(7.1/10)

Currently working in Bank of America..with an experience of 18 months after graduation.

Extra Curriculars : Have won many certificates in Sports as i was a part of My Univ Cricket team..
Have also got a certificate of appreciation from the Dir of IIIT-Hyd as i was the part core commitee of Stuents Parliament in my Coll..

Throughout my School life, write from begining i have won certificates in Extra curriculars be it Sports , literature, debates etc..

I am currently a crucial part of the one of the NGOs being run by the BoA in Mumbai..and have also contributed in one of the NGOs in Hyd..

Please let me know of what you think about my chances, as i feel that not so impressive Acads might hinder my chances along with a work ex of 18 mons..+ 2 Internships..

Dear Gaurank,

Here is a brief profile eval:

Analytical Horsepower: Weak-Average.
Note: Since the GPA is a bit low the GMAT HAS to be 730+ taking into consideration that you are a younger candidate.

Work Ex: Weak-Average
Note: The internships will not be counted as full-time work experience. Not much data from the Bank of America experience. You have to have significant achievements here.

Extra Curriculars: Average
A myriad of activities. Figure out 2-3 where you can show that you have been involved in for quite sometime.

Overall, you are in the 'Weak-Average' zone.

TO DO:
Try to focus on your current work experience and draw a growth path for yourself. Do have a look at this article. It may help you. https://www.thinkisb.com/blog/2010/05/15 ... -stronger/
