As many as 300 of the 720 paintings attributed to Rembrandt may actually be the works of his students or other admirers.
(A) the 720 paintings attributed to Rembrandt may
(B) the 720 paintings attributed to be Rembrandt’s might
(C) the 720 paintings that were attributed to be by Rembrandt may
(D) the 720 Rembrandt paintings that were once attributed to him might
(E) Rembrandt’s paintings, although 720 were once attributed to him, may
This was my approach, please clarify as where did I bungled up.
E i out because it is awkward and ambiguous
D out because it changes the tense
out of A & B, A is more clear.
But between A& C, C is more clear in a way that it says that...attributed to be by X.
does attributed to ..implies attributed to be by?

hey Igon,
The phrase "attributed to" requires a noun object. We can attribute increasing temperatures to global warming or attribute GM's downfall to Rick Wagoner. We can't use a *verb* phrase as the object, as in "attributed to {be by Rembrandt}". Gerunds (verbs acting as nouns) are the closest you can get; for example:
John's success was attributed to {his trying hard in class}.

Can someone explain where I am going wrong below?
Since "his" possesive pronoun requires a person noun, E is the only option that supplies it. Hence, although, it distorts the meaning, E seems to be the best.

I am not sure why we need a possessive pronoun. X is attributed to Y is the correct idiom X is attributed to Y's?? What of Y?? acumen?? memory or any thing that belongs to his skillset, then we might need a possessive of Y, other wise Y is good enough & correct

here is what i think scthakur :
you CAN use a possessive pronoun referring to a possessive noun OR simple noun
BUT a simple pronoun (non-possessive) CANNOT refer to a possessive noun.
I hope that clears ur doubt if not just let me know ,,...
