Can't concentrate [#permalink] New post 13 Aug 2005, 08:09
I have been studying on and off the past 3 months, even took a Kaplan course (waste of money for 1month version) and I feel very unconfident. My best score has been 500 on the Kaplan CAT's to give you a measure...I stupidly scheduled the test for August 27th, and time is running out on me...The biggest factor I feel that's contributing to my low scores, and poor performance is concentration. My mind wonders because this stuff is so incredibly boring to me. To make matters worse, when I see my low scores it makes me even more demoralized and doubtful of myself..

Anyway, enough negative talk....does anyone have a suggestion or advice on how to improve concentration? I feel if I don't turn this around in a week, I'll have to cancel my test which obviously won't be good

Thanks to anyone out there who responds

Boring or Not, its a necessary evil... [#permalink] New post 14 Aug 2005, 07:43
...so learn to love it. I find the RC incredibly boring and the CR not far behind, but I approach each of these question types, as well as all the questions on the test, in two ways.

First, I approach each question individually. The one before and the one after have no bearing on the question at hand. Even if I've seen the same question before, it makes no difference. The wording on this question could be slightly different than the last time I "think" I saw it. So, to breeze through it could prove disastrous.

Second, I view each question as a challenge. There's a method to the madness, and if you've taken enough practice questions and completed enough practice tests, you begin to realize a number of patterns as far as how to solve and what to look out for. When I see a question posed that falls outside of those tricks and patterns, then I see it as a challenge and try to solve it quickly. Sometimes I get it right and sometimes I get it wrong, but in review or reworking the same question days later, its rare that I miss it the second time through.

Also, try limiting your Quant questions to 15 and ramp those 15 up in difficulty. That will closely mirror the challenge of the GMAT.

It sounds like you've done a lot of Kaplan practice. Now, that's probably best for Quant, but have you completed the OG? If not, you need to do that ASAP! Get the PowerPrep tests. Take one before OG and take the other two days before the GMAT.

Using these strategies, I boosted my first score of 550 to a score of 650 in mid-July. Walking out of the test, I knew a lot of things I needed to study and am now angling for a 700.

Good luck,
Paul
