Has anyone here either participated in a case competition or planning to? If so, what was your experience? I'm trying to decide if I should try to get a team together to at least participate in an internal competition.

I did one and am doing another right now. My career path is nowhere near consulting, but I find the competitions useful because it helps you understand the industry of the case you're studying, learn to do strategy, and also trains you very well for working in teams. So far I've enjoyed the process of these competitions, even if I never win one.

I've done several already, and I have a big one coming up tomorrow, presenting to the CEO's of the company who created the case. It's all preparation for the international competitions which come up around spring time. As kryzak said, they are invaluable in learning how to work with people from different countries and backgrounds, teaches you to work efficiently and how to learn and understand about an industry as quick as possible.

Thanks for your feedback! What you guys said is pretty much what I've heard (great experience, good teamwork practice, etc...). I'm still not sure if I can find the time to participate in one though...

won 2nd place ($1500) in one this weekend. It was TONS of work (40+ hours per person, so 160 man-hours over a week) but very rewarding and taught me a LOT about how to analyze a case and a company and come up with good recommendations. Highly recommended if you're going into consulting, General Management, or are just interested in strategy.

Quote: won 2nd place ($1500) in one this weekend. Congrats! It does sound really interesting and worthwhile, however, I just would not have the time to put into something like that. I have heard that there are some smaller competitions where you have only a day or less to work on it. That sounds more like a timeframe I could work with!

Finished 3rd in my competition. The case was very interesting... was for a theme park, and some of the ideas will probably be taken into use!!! It was interesting to hear the concepts from the CEO in the final talk. One of the members of the winning team was so good that the marketing director opened up a position for him if he is interested.

I participated in one competition this semester, and it turned out to be the best decision I've made so far. We won the competition, so I got a good chunk of cash to pay for a vacation with my wife. It was an amazing networking opportunity, as it opened the door for an internship interview with one of the sponsoring companies, and eventually an internship offer, which I've accepted. So, not only was it a great learning experience, and opportunity to really test my presentation skills, and ability to work in a team, but I got a job out of it. You can't beat that.
