Anyone that is applying to Columbia.... do you know how important it is to adhere to word limits? I'm looking at an essay and it says "Recommended 500 word limit". Well, is it recommended or is it a limit? :?
I just did that essay and mine is ~ 600 words. Granted it is my first draft, so I can probably cut some out, I'd still apreciate anyone sharing what they know about how AdCom views writing more than "recommended"

thanks!

I am applying to Columbia, but I do not know their policy on word limits. I will say that, personally, I will not be more than a few words over on any of my essays for any of the schools - even though the limits are largely arbitrary.

I'll also add that my first drafts tend to be about 3x the limit for shorter essays, and 2x for longer essays. Something I learned in my (brief) days as a journalist is that great articles, and I hope essays, come about when you edit fiercely but retain all of the ideas from your original drafts - if you do this you'll be left with action-packed essays that should grab their attention.

You can go to 550 if need be, but I wouldn't exceed that. I'd suggest finding ways to trim.
