Hi,
Can someone explain this problem to me please.

Thanks

How many different signals can be transmitted by hoisting 3 red, 4 yellow and 2 blue flags on a pole, assuming that in transmitting a signal all nine flags are to be used?

Since there are 9 flags, the total no. of possible signals = 9!.

However since some of the flags are of the same color and it does not matter in what way they are placed, we get 9!/3!4!2!.
