Consider this, when we have the inequality |a| < 2, it means that the distance between a and 0 is less than 2:

-----(-2)------0------2-----

Therefore, |a| < 2 implies that -2 < a < 2.

Similarly, when we have the inequality |x - 2| < 3, it means that -3 < x - 2 < 3.
