hiya

is it necessary/important to contact the faculty of the universities one intends to apply?

Not necessary , but it helps to email at least one professor in the area you want to apply to. Why ? because you will spend four-five years in that university in case you get accepted and you take the offer. So getting to be sure about the fit between your research interests and the professors at the univ is important. This takes time, .. to go thru prof's bios etc ... but is usually rewarding.
