1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8 = 36 (assuming the order that he plants the trees within a given day does not matter)

If he plants 8 the first day, then he is stuck with 1 the second day, and one the third day...

If he plants 7 the first day, then he could do one the second and two the third or two the second and one the third.
